Bringing Alice Margatroid to life for this shoot presented one primary challenge: how to capture the puppeteer's signature cool detachment and lively grace within a static frame. The wardrobe layers are exceptionally rich—the lace trim on the white blouse, the cuff details, and the tiered ruffles lining the deep blue puffy skirt all demanded meticulous arrangement to preserve their pristine drape during motion. To honor the character's canon, I opted for structured, deep-brown lace-up knee-high boots paired with lace-trimmed over-the-knee White stockings, achieving an overall balance of youthful delicacy and doll-like aloofness.
From early preparation, ensuring Alice's refined yet distant presence required careful fabric and tailoring curation. The blouse lace had to be crisp and structured rather than collapsing softly against the skin, while the crinoline underskirt required enough volume and arc to bloom into an umbrella silhouette during leaps. For cosmetics, the focus centered on defining the eye orbits, harmonizing with pale blonde wavy locks to summon an ethereal aura as though stepping straight from an antique storybook.
During shooting, the indoor hall featured modern architectural cues—uniform cool-toned overhead lamps and polished, reflective floors that contrasted sharply with Alice's Forest of Magic origin. Yet this visual friction sparked fantastic creative chemistry. To shatter static rigidity, I attempted a dynamic jump with one leg kicked back behind, utilizing the striped umbrella as a compositional anchor. The sleek lines of the closed umbrella combined with the wide arc of flowing blonde waves instantly imbued the frame with kinetic tension. Balancing on one foot anchored by a heavy leather boot while extending the other leg back placed my center of gravity in precarious flux, all while maintaining effortless, nonchalant grace across my upper torso. Gripping that pale blue and white striped umbrella felt just like wielding a magic wand.
Capturing the exact frame where the hair caught the air required dedicated patience from photographer @Shuangyueying (striving to be an excellent photographer edition). We repeated the take numerous times, fine-tuning wind angles, movement amplitude, and facial composure before locking in the ideal shot. Every Touhou Project cosplay reinforces my deep admiration for the source lore—Alice's quiet solitude and obsessive devotion to magic always fill me with profound reverence when stepping into her shoes. While maneuvering in voluminous petticoats and structured boots proved exhausting, seeing the finalized proofs dissolved every ounce of fatigue.
