This shoot featured a fan-concept (fanon) design of Moriya Suwako from Touhou Project. The location was chosen among tall waves of Golden miscanthus, perfectly echoing the theme of a golden Gensokyo, where warm natural lighting bathed the entire silhouette in a radiant golden glow.
For the wardrobe, I chose this purple-red and white paneled dress. The highlights were the broad ruffles and gathered pleats on the iconic frog hat, with red bow accents adding vibrant pops of color. Considering that such complex Anime cosplay attire easily snags on wild grasses, every step required careful footing. Backlighting during post-afternoon hours shone right through the sheer sleeves, sculpting beautiful rim lighting.
For props, we brought iron rings, a yellow umbrella, and a lotus leaf stalk. The iron ring formed an excellent framing device from the front, while holding the lotus stem added a touch of rustic outdoor leisure; these props allowed hand placements to feel natural and effortless. Photographer Shoukuoyu is exceptionally skilled at capturing candid running and glancing-back moments in the breeze, lending lively dynamism to the frame rather than stiff poses.
Regarding the environment, the miscanthus reached waist height, naturally blurring foreground and background to make the subject pop. Because the grass was dense and could easily obstruct the lens, we sought out clearings with rock bases. For lighting, we primarily utilized backlighting and side-backlighting so the golden grass plumes appeared to glow, directly resonating with the golden Gensokyo aesthetic. Sudden gusts of wind on-site paired with held props produced stunning, cinematic shots.
I brought two pairs of shoes: black leather shoes paired with white ankle socks to match the outfit, and soft-soled flats for walking across rocky terrain. Constantly turning, crouching, and sitting in the brush was physically taxing, leaving grass burrs and dust on the hem, yet the final results were well worth the effort. Post-processing applied a subtle warm shift to preserve the golden texture of the background while keeping skin tones luminous, capturing the autumn mood without dulling facial clarity. This fan design naturally shines in bright, whimsical Outdoor photography, and I hope sharing this Touhou Project Moriya Suwako cosplay offers helpful inspiration to fellow creators.
