For shooting Saigyouji Yuyuko from Touhou Project, we chose a cherry blossom forest in its peak bloom period to complete this outdoor location photoshoot. My partner's equipment consisted of a Sony A7R V body paired with the SEL50F12GM lens, as well as the Viltrox 135LAB. The exquisite background bokeh brought by the wide aperture was highly ideal, turning the pink flower trees filling the sky into a soft blur. This formed a very comfortable warm and cold visual collision with Yuyuko's iconic peach-pink short curly hair and ice-blue attire.
Great care was put into the materials for the costume, makeup, and props this time. The outer layer utilized translucent tulle and lace fabrics, giving the overall texture a lightweight feel. Especially when a gentle breeze blew, the semi-translucent large cuffs and layered ruffled hem would flutter naturally, looking exceptionally agile when capturing dynamic shots. The headpiece was a mob cap stitched from blue-and-white floral fabric, with a row of exquisite tiny beads inlaid along the edge, elevating the gentle beauty of the overall styling to a whole new level. The pearl necklace around the neck, paired with blue gemstones and an exquisite clasp, offered a sense of layering without looking overly complex, beautifully accentuating the neckline. The blue folding fan held in hand served as the core visual prop; the blue-and-white porcelain patterns on the fan face and the tassel details at the bottom went a long way in restoring the character's temperament.
During the shoot, we primarily worked under the relatively soft natural light of mid-afternoon. The sunlight filtering through the flower branches formed beautiful rim lighting on the hair and lace edges, giving the frame a very breathable feel. The interaction with the folding fan was the highlight of this photoset. I experimented with a perspective shot by extending the fan toward the lens, which increased the depth and presence of the frame, making people feel as if the fan was about to reach outside the screen. To capture the flowing effect of the skirt hem, the photography director had me perform a few turns and upward arm-swinging movements. Combined with the compression of the 135LAB lens, the character's silhouette and environmental proportions were well controlled. Moreover, this lens features outstanding chromatic aberration control, with no noticeable purple or green fringing under backlighting. No drastic changes were made during post-processing; I mainly adjusted the skin texture and nudged the overall tone toward a soft pinkish-white, allowing this portrait work of Saigyouji Yuyuko to convey a relaxed, aesthetic, and slightly dreamy spring atmosphere for this cosplay photography creation.
