This shoot challenged a cyberpunk-style Hatsune Miku. From costume preparation, it was full of tests. The silver metallic textured sleeveless top kept reflecting under the lights; to avoid capturing a cheap plastic feel, we made many subtractions in innerwear and lighting, utilizing strong side-backlights to outline the contours and ensure the light could directly bring out the cold, rigid futuristic feel of the costume. That bright blue tie and black glossy long gloves are the finishing touches of the entire styling, paired with the classic black pleated short skirt and over-the-knee socks, which not only visually elongated the proportions but also added a bit of playful mechanical feel.
Wig maintenance was the absolute priority this time. To create ultra-long twin-tails that look natural and can flow with the wind, I used multiple wigs for splicing, and the wavy arc of the hair ends was curled out bit by bit with a curling iron. Because the wigs are very long, they were prone to tangling or knotting during studio shooting, requiring anti-frizz spray and a wide-tooth comb to untangle them at any time. In terms of headwear, the red geometric hair ornaments and the black headset with pink glowing elements—I deliberately added some yellow indicator light details inside to give it a great sense of technology even in low-light environments.
During actual shooting, creating the scene atmosphere was crucial. For the first set of actions, we tried utilizing blue holographic lighting effects in the foreground, creating a sense of being surrounded by data streams through camera angle adjustments and post-processing special effects. In the second shot's high-altitude railing scene, although the background was a built set and post-composited planet and city skyline, to express that relaxed feeling of floating high in the altitude, the core was actually the tightening of core strength and control over limb extension. When sitting, special attention had to be paid to leg placement; it needed to showcase the absolute territory of the over-the-knee socks while keeping the posture natural, so slightly turning sideways and knee-bending actions could better flatter the lines. In terms of expression management, one had to rein in everyday casualness, and the gaze needed that aloof and focused feeling unique to a virtual diva, unable to blink even under strong light, so that the catchlight in the eyes would be bright enough.
For the final flat-lying image, we utilized a highly reflective mirror floor to reflect neon lights. This posture had extremely high demands on the spread-out shape of the wig; after I lay down, the assistant spent quite a bit of time spreading out the twin-tails bit by bit to ensure the hair strands formed a nice fan shape on the floor. At the same time, blue-purple lighting had to hit from the side to make the metallic texture of the clothes and facial contours more three-dimensional. The plush doll of the same color scheme held in arms was also a prop used during shooting to relieve tension and increase interaction. Although the entire shooting process required constantly adjusting the reflective angles of the costume and the form of the wig, seeing that cyberpunk atmosphere blending virtual and reality in the final photos made all the preparation and sweat feel totally worth it. This styling is not just a restoration, but also a visual exploration of a digital idol in a future world.
