This time I cosplayed Cifera from Honkai: Star Rail. From the moment I got the concept art, I was pondering how to restore that lazy yet slightly mysterious feeling. The parts that required the most effort in this outfit were actually the texture of the hood and the tail. I made several pattern iterations for the cat ears and fluffy tail to ensure they looked fluffy and natural on camera without being too heavy to affect my range of motion. Finding the silver hair and blue eyes wig styling took a long time, and I finally chose a texture with a cool gray tone; paired with blue contact lenses, the reflection under night streetlights turned out exceptionally clean.
The shoot was set on city streets at night. Low-angle upward shots were my own suggestion because Cifera's character setting carries a composed sense of looking down from above, and this angle highlights the metallic sheen of the gold leg armor and the 3D structure of the long boots nicely. The black and gold upper outfit really tested my sewing skills—the chest metal decorations and shoulder colorful round plates were all handcrafted patches. To create layers in low-light environments, I specifically used fabric with a subtle shimmer. As for the white tail, I didn't perform much liquifying in post-processing, keeping the natural direction of the fur so it looks more organic.
As for makeup, the focus was placed on the eyes. Since Cifera's eyes are highly recognizable, I slightly elongated the eyeliner, combined with light-colored eyebrow powder to make the overall facial contours soft yet the gaze sharp enough. It was quite windy during the shoot, and the blue-gold trim on the hood's edge blew up in the wind, catching a few very dynamic shots. Of course, the most exhausting part was this half-squat pose—to keep balance, my weight was completely pressed onto my left leg, but for the visual result, I persisted through dozens of shots.
The biggest challenge for this outdoor shoot was actually the lighting. Nighttime neon lights and streetlight sources were very chaotic; facing the light source directly would easily cause overexposure, so the photographer used a reflector to fill light from the side. The resulting contrast between warm and cool tones felt super comfortable, making the blue and gold elements pop even more in dark areas. Honestly, every time I cosplay a character with lots of metal accessories in a Sci-fi style cosplay, my biggest takeaway is never be afraid of trouble: reinforce places that need fixing with hot melt glue and safety pins so you can move freely during the shoot.
Many friends asked me why I chose Cifera. It's actually because of a sense of contradiction in her—she looks lazy and casual, yet carries an unignorable sense of control. This aura is particularly difficult to handle in Cat ear cosplay: you can't be too serious like a warrior, nor too soft and cute, losing the character's mysterious tone. So this time I deliberately held back my smile, keeping only a slight upward curve at the corners of my mouth. Paired with a gaze looking straight into the lens, I hoped to convey that confidence of 'the world revolves around me.'
Finally, speaking of this costume's accessories, the straps and buckles around the waist are all genuine leather. Although a bit heavy, the texture is indeed much better than plastic pieces. For the blue-and-white round plates on the shoulder armor, I used transparent acrylic material as a base and overlaid laser stickers, creating a gradient reflection effect under different lighting; the physical item was even more stunning than in photos. The tail fixation actually used a belt-style inner lining so it wouldn't drop no matter how I turned, nor squeeze uncomfortably.
By the second half of the shoot, I was already quite exhausted, but seeing the images created by the collision of neon night scenes and metallic armor in the final photos made everything feel worth it. Cifera's look stands out as a unique design in Honkai: Star Rail, blending sci-fi elements with fantasy animal traits. This attempt served as a nice little breakthrough for my own cosplay skills. I hope to have more opportunities in the future to interpret characters filled with such distinctive traits.
