[Ruan Mei cosplay] Gentle Zither Melodies in Honkai: Star Rail

When receiving this outfit for Ruan Mei, I was first drawn to the ruby-adorned bow at the collar and the intricate metal cutout waist ornament. Although the overall color scheme is deep blue and white, gold thread and bead stringing in the details lend the entire ensemble a rich, high-quality texture. To restore the character's temperament, we specifically selected a warm-lit indoor studio to mimic the effect of late afternoon sunlight streaming through window lattices.

Before the shoot, I was somewhat worried about the circular yueqin prop; because the instrument body is large, holding it naturally while avoiding blocking waist designs posed a challenge. The photographer suggested trying more seated poses, utilizing the leg extension to balance the composition. Photo 3, shot seated on a wooden daybed, achieved the exact desired result—light sliced a distinct boundary of light and shadow near my feet, while alternating between the zither and fan props kept hand gestures dynamic.

For makeup, focus was placed on eyeshadow and teal contact lenses; since the character's gaze is naturally serene, I avoided overly heavy eyelashes, opting for a matte milk-tea lip shade that echoed dark hair highlights. The wig was styled with gentle waves alongside straight-cut bangs, steering the overall aesthetic toward a cool yet soft Chinese-style cosplay flair.

Beyond the yueqin, the silk round fan painted with orchid motifs stood out in close-up shots. To maintain visual clarity, I carefully adjusted my hand angles while holding the fan to prevent glove reflections from diverting attention from the fan art. The mirror composition was an impromptu on-site idea inspired by a vintage round wood-framed mirror; blurring the foreground to compress the visual focus inside the mirror frame unexpectedly yielded a picturesque still-life effect.

The shoot lasted around four hours, requiring two makeup touch-ups due to heat from studio spotlights causing forehead shine. However, the set decorations added tremendous value—teapots, bonsai plants on tea tables, and an adjacent white crane sculpture infused the imagery with a complete narrative scene. Furthermore, even light distribution in the studio allowed for a translucent look without heavy post-processing.

As an attempt at Honkai: Star Rail Roleplay, I felt this look's biggest challenge was conveying the character's composure and reservation through posture. Standing poses couldn't be forced, shoulders needed to relax while cradling the instrument, and toes needed slight tension in seated poses—these small details heavily influence overall presence. This photo series leans realistic without exaggerated distortions, aiming to present the character's inherent quiet and gentle ambience.
