[Asuka Cosplay] Sharing a Cosplay makeup test of the Classic Neon Genesis Evangelion Look

There were many details to deliberate during this Cosplay makeup test for Asuka's classic red, white, and blue uniform. First, the hair is long, straight orange hair; after washing, it needed to be blow-dried and straightened with a flat iron, otherwise it gets frizzy easily. The curvature of the twintails is crucial, requiring technique to tie them with a perfect natural drape, and fixing the red nerve clips on top of the head also took quite a bit of time. To make the facial contour look delicate, the bangs were trimmed thinly with an inward curl.

A lot of effort went into the eye area. These blue contact lenses have a large diameter and require careful insertion. For eye makeup, a light brown was used as the base, deepening the lower eyelid to create an eye-enlarging dropped effect, with liquid eyeliner drawing fine lower lashes to make the eyes appear larger and rounder. Blush was applied relatively high to make the apples of the cheeks look fuller. The lipstick chosen was a hydrating watery red leaning slightly pink to brighten the complexion on camera. The outfit combines a white shirt, a red necktie, and blue suspenders. The collar of the white shirt is very crisp, and tying the necktie requires particular precision—it must be tight and symmetrical. The fabric of the blue pinafore skirt is somewhat structured, supporting the overall silhouette and perfectly recreating the character's uniform feel.

To take great photos, I experimented with multiple angles. Photos 1 and 3 used an empty hand blurred in the foreground; it felt interactive but slightly cluttered. Photo 2 is an upright close-up headshot with a serious expression. Photo 4 features a tilted head looking at the camera with a slightly off-center gaze, which looked nice. But ultimately, Photo 5 was chosen as the cover because the smile in Photo 5 is the most natural, the gaze is very confident, the composition is centered, the background is clean, and the lighting is soft without weird shadows—best showcasing the overall makeup and styling effect.

The entire shooting process was indeed exhausting, requiring constant adjustments to the wig and necktie to prevent distortion. In post-processing, the main goal was preserving the raw authenticity of the original shot—slightly brightening skin tone and retouching minor skin blemishes without heavy smoothing that would erase texture. In terms of makeup style, I opted for a slightly youthful look, as the character naturally carries a tsundere and confident vibe. The outfit felt quite snug, but when put together, it looked incredibly sharp. As the makeup and accessories came together step by step, the visual effect was stunning. The shoot was done indoors under natural light without complex lighting setups, making the resulting feel exceptionally natural.

The entire process from combing the wig to wrapping up the shoot took several hours. Tying up the hair for a long time actually hurt, but the moment I saw the photos, everything felt worth it. This makeup look had high fidelity with a classic color palette. I look forward to an opportunity to shoot full-body photos outdoors later, which might add even more flavor. Styling the wig takes real patience, combing along the hair grain to minimize frizz. To match this look, I also slightly adjusted the length and color of my eyebrows, lightening them with an eyebrow mascara. Wearing this sailor uniform gave me a bit of a challenge with its tight waist, so I didn't dare eat too much, but it was all worth it for the results. Maintaining camera presence is essential; the photographer's encouragement and staying relaxed make expressions much more vivid. People's impression of Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion is often strong and confident, so in facial expression management, I did my best to maintain this high-spirited, energetic state.
