This time, I tried the dark nun look from Hatsune Miku Rabbit Hole, which presents a striking contrast to her usual refreshing and sweet designs.
For the outfit, I opted for a black form-fitting bodysuit paired with large white pointed collars and cuffs, accented with a teardrop-shaped cutout on the chest to give the ensemble more breathing room. The headpiece preserves the silhouette of a nun's veil while adding black and red accents to enrich color depth. The wig is a soft purple-to-pink gradient; styled into twintails, it was accessorized with black X-shaped hairpins on the side of the forehead and a crimson teardrop beneath the right eye, further intensifying the dark Gothic nun aesthetic. The handheld pink cross and neck choker necklace served as finishing touches, popping a vibrant splash of color from the dominant red-and-black palette.
The shoot was captured on a Fujifilm X-S10 with a 27mm F1.2 lens. In dim lighting, this setup's straight-out-of-camera color science made things delightfully hassle-free. The on-set lighting was dominated by red glows and shadowy tones, set against background elements like colossal cog gear mechanisms and Roman numerals, with black-and-white checkerboard flooring below and deep crimson roses and black vines draped all around. To echo a theme of "judgment," I explored various physical postures: when standing, taking advantage of the high-cut slit to accentuate leg lines while raising the cross created an imposing tension; seated in a chair, crossing my legs or leaning forward with one hand on my hip injected fierce attitude; while in the kneeling shot, raising my arms overhead with crossed wrists conveyed a ritualistic sense of restraint.
Because of the low ambient light, autofocusing was quite a hurdle. The ultra-wide F1.2 aperture brought a razor-thin depth of field; we had to ensure pinpoint sharpness on the eyes and facial features while framing red beaded curtains and flowers as foreground bokeh to add spatial layers. The contrast between the white pantyhose cosplay and the black-and-white checkered floor also drew visual focus right to the legs. Overall, we experimented extensively with wardrobe styling and lighting. Dark style cosplay demands rigorous expression management and body control—requiring me to discard everyday sweet habits and immerse myself into a nun's austere, enigmatic presence. The resulting photographic texture matched my exact expectations, making this one of my favorite photoshoot sets this year.
The choice of fabric was also carefully thought out: while the long sleeves appear modest and covered, pairing them with an open back and high-cut sides cultivated a contradictory tension between ascetic restraint and allure. For portability, the prop cross was crafted from lightweight materials, making it easy to handle across various poses. Wearing black high heels during standing takes was genuinely tiring on the hard checkered floor; standing firm while maintaining graceful curves required constantly recalibrating my center of gravity. These behind-the-scenes subtleties are truly the cornerstone of every stunning photo.
In color grading, I focused on boosting the contrast between red and black without excessive skin-smoothing, preserving authentic skin texture and subtle tonal transitions. Because on-set red lights can muddle skin tones, I calibrated the skin specifically in Camera Raw, shifting the tone slightly toward cool porcelain white to make the subject pop against the dark backdrop. From preparation to execution, from styling the wig to testing makeup shades, this set required immense care. I hope this unique stylistic exploration is communicated in its entirety.
