[Violet Evergarden cosplay] Grasslands and Letters of Violet Evergarden: Meeting the Sunlight

It's been a while since shooting this photo set. Looking through the raw images, I often notice many small details and can even recall the genuine warmth of the sunlight on my face back then. From the red ribbon at the neckline to every fold of the puffy white long skirt, this dark blue and white color-blocked outfit underwent repeated adjustments against original character settings. The most energy-consuming part was the silver mechanical gloves on my arms, molded from hard materials; the joint range of motion went through multiple rounds of polishing to ensure shape restoration without restricting movement. Especially when holding the letter sealed with red wax, the metallic texture created a wonderful contrast with the warm, soft paper.

The photos were shot on a slope in the suburbs covered in wild reeds and foxtail grass. The natural light there was fantastic, but strong lighting meant constantly finding light-facing and backlit angles. The photographer used a large aperture and shallow depth of field to blur foreground grass leaves, giving the image rich depth. We shot at that location for a long time, during which we swapped between two parasols of different styles and colors on the spot. The black lace-trimmed parasol formed crisp, clean shadows under transmitted sunlight, while the blue parasol with ruffled edges appeared much softer within the environment. As for props, to match the red wax-sealed letter, we prepared a retro dark brown leather suitcase; the surface had some weathered scratches, looking full of storytelling charm when placed in this Grassland outdoor scene.

Wearing the mechanical gloves outdoors was actually quite stuffy, and finger mobility was limited; simple actions like holding letters or adjusting the parasol handle required multiple attempts to find a comfortable position. For the wig, I selected a very lightweight light-golden style, tied back at the crown so it maintained a fluffy softness when the wind blew without appearing greasy or sticking too flat to the scalp. It was actually quite windy that day, and the skirt hem was frequently whipped up by the breeze. To capture natural moments where the skirt was falling just right or floating gracefully with the wind, we tried countless times. The few photos selected in the end represent a great balance of posture, lighting, and wind speed.

From early prep and actual shooting to post-processing, a lot of care went into this project. Because the raw files were large—with single images exceeding 50MB—editing allowed us to notice many details easily overlooked in ordinary photos, such as cuff lining stitching and hand-carved markings on the gloves. The entire photoset did not intentionally darken or alter original colors, instead preserving transparent warm sunshine and meadow green. Shooting a Grassland outdoor scene takes a heavy toll on stamina, but seeing the final output freeze the costume's physical texture and atmosphere makes it feel totally worth it. Having such an immersive Anime-style photography shooting experience amid fast-paced daily life is, in itself, something that brings deep focus.
