This Sakura cosplay from Cardcaptor Sakura leans toward a gorgeous and dreamy aesthetic. I chose an oversized, fluffy floral dress to restore that energetic vibe of the first-generation moe goddess. The mid-air leap captured in the photo took numerous attempts at the convention venue to get right. Although jumping repeatedly was exhausting, the final result was definitely worth it.
First, about the costume: its main visual anchor is the dramatically exaggerated petal skirt at the bottom. To achieve the fluffiness shown in the photos, I wore three layers of petticoats inside, supporting the white safety shorts and floral decorations to look very three-dimensional. The blue and pink artificial flowers on the skirt were hand-sewn, carrying significant volume and weight. Whenever I jumped or spun around, the flowers and pink ribbons danced along in mid-air, creating a far more impactful visual effect in motion than in static poses. The white off-the-shoulder top has a form-fitting cut, which, paired with a huge pink rose bow across the chest and a rose choker on the neck, maximizes the sweetness of the entire look. The separate sheer pink puff sleeves on my arms served as a finishing touch, adding lightness and fluidity to arm movements without restricting range when swinging the magical wand.
For hair, I selected a layered golden-yellow short curly wig, paired with a blue and pink floral wreath headband on top and long pink ribbons hanging down both sides, giving off a candy-like sweetness. The makeup leaned toward an anime style, maintaining a clean face while enlarging eye depth so that my playful and confident expression could be clearly conveyed. In the photos, I hold the iconic magic wand—its metallic star and wings details, along with the ruby base and pink handle, serve as a lovely accent against the pink-and-white look, perfectly aligning with the Magical Girl setting.
These photos are actually convention photos captured live at the venue. The venue was quite spacious with rows of lights on the ceiling, rendering a cool-toned indoor light source. The photographer chose a low-angle shot, which is particularly great for capturing jump moments—it elongates the airtime height, and paired with a single-leg tucked jump pose, creates the magical illusion of floating in mid-air as seen in the photos. Maintaining balance in the air while controlling facial expressions and hold on the wand proved quite a test of core strength and expression management, requiring multiple consecutive jumps to capture the perfect moment. Compared to the heavy skirt, light pink thick-heeled pumps paired with lace and bow socks offered relatively free movement for my legs, keeping the action from looking clunky.
As an iconic first-generation moe goddess in the anime world, Cardcaptor Sakura holds many people's childhood memories. The most touching aspect of her design is her bravery and innocence, always filled with curiosity about the world. So when cosplaying her, I deliberately emphasized this vibrant energy, avoiding cool or mature expressions in favor of childish cheerfulness. Although this look was quite complex with heavy fabrics and artificial flower decorations—making changing into it somewhat time-consuming—the moment makeup was done and I stood before the camera holding props, feeling synchronized with the character's soul was truly magical. The photographer's snap rhythm was superb, without heavy editing or rigid posing, allowing the rhythm in the photos to look wonderfully natural. Overall, the costume fidelity and convention photos performance were thoroughly satisfying, with every photo capturing a moment immersed in character—a heartfelt interpretation of the anime Magical Girl trope.
