The theme for this Night photography session was 'stars scattered across the ground.' The underlying concept was actually quite simple: using the dark tones of the night alongside warm light sources from props to establish a stark warm-and-cool contrast. Starting with the outfit, I wore a classic sailor-style JK uniform featuring a short-sleeved white top paired with a navy pleated skirt, topped with a white beret pinned with a pale blue floral hair clip. For footwear, I paired white mid-calf crew socks with chunky black platform loafers, creating a pristine white, blue, and black palette that stood out vividly against the nocturnal surroundings.

Lighting is always the trickiest part of Night photography, but we prepared plenty of luminous props this time. The rim of the clear umbrella was adorned with silver and dark star pendants, I held a vintage metal hurricane lantern in hand, and numerous glowing little fairy star lights were arranged artfully across the ground—some atop stone steps, others along the grass verge. To prevent frames from falling too dark, the lantern and floor-scattered star lights provided wonderful organic fill light. When handling the clear umbrella, ambient light filtered through the canopy onto my face while easily generating glare; the photographer continually refined lamp angles while I twirled the umbrella handle to ensure even facial illumination.

Posing-wise, I explored a diverse range of states: standing upright with one leg lightly raised while holding the lantern toward the lens; sitting on the stone stairs with hands clasped as the lantern rested beside my knee; and crouching on the grass ringed by glowing star lights. To capture dynamic vitality, one frame was a candid action jump—skirt flaring outward as I landed on one foot with both hands propping the umbrella open. This was quite challenging physically; catching the exact instant the pleats billowed meant jumping in place multiple times while keeping my facial expression composed.

The entire shoot faced fairly strong winds, especially while perched atop rocks near the bridge where gusts whipped the skirt hem around, demanding constant tidying of fabric pleats and beret positioning. While crouching, light casting upward across my face formed rich visual layering against the distant red steel bridge trusses and soft bokeh of city nightscapes. Poor nocturnal visibility tested the photographer's manual focusing, but seamless teamwork pulled it through.

This entire set was created while having fun, brainstorming how to integrate light and shadow along the way. The clear umbrella paired with fairy lights photoshoot props and the handheld lantern truly felt like a whimsical night stroll with a lantern in hand. Post-processing retained the serene tranquility of the night while amplifying the contrast between warm yellow glows and the cool midnight sky. Seeing the shimmering bokeh spots in the finished frames made shivering through the cold wind thoroughly rewarding. Given the chance, I will definitely explore more Night photography styles utilizing illuminated props.
