Spending a very healing afternoon with a sailor suit and coffee at the 4a4a4a Cafe in Zhongshan.
The inspiration for this photoshoot was to capture the ambiance of an after-school moment straight out of a Japanese drama—that feeling of shaking off the exhaustion of a day's studies and meeting up with good friends on the weekend for some Zhongshan store exploration. I chose a classic daily sailor suit cosplay outfit: a white loose short-sleeved top, a blue-and-white sailor collar, tied with a bright yellow scarf that looks exceptionally vibrant under the sunlight. The bottom is a high-quality navy blue pleated miniskirt, paired with white socks and dark brown loafers. This combination preserves the youthful essence of a JK uniform without looking stiff, bringing a light and comfortable feel while walking down the street.
For this Cafe photoshoot, we chose a place called 4a4a4a Cafe in Zhongshan. Mengmeng is really great at discovering hidden gem shops tucked away in city corners. The layout of this store is quite unique, with a small courtyard at the entrance planted with lush greenery. Sunlight filters through the gaps in the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the bluestone pavement. That day, we casually brought along a red umbrella with white polka dots and a clear umbrella; these simple props instantly turned into great atmospheric accents in front of the lens.
During the shoot, I didn't deliberately seek fixed poses. Mengmeng kept telling me, "What I want is that natural state, as if you just happened to pass by and stopped for a cup of coffee." So I held the umbrella by the doorframe, reached up for the fabric noren curtains hanging from the eaves, or leaned against the white bicycle parked there, daydreaming. The bicycle at the entrance with its wire mesh basket had a genuine vintage feel, and paired with the carp streamers hanging nearby, it felt like instantly time-traveling to an old street in a Japanese town.
The space inside the coffee shop was also extremely photogenic. Pushing the door open, you could smell the rich coffee aroma, with a few old books placed by the window and afternoon rays shining right onto the table. I casually picked up a book to flip through or balanced it on my head making silly faces; Mengmeng captured these relaxed interactions with great precision. My favorite moment was sitting by the window resting my chin on my hand, closing my eyes to feel the warmth of the sun—it felt as if every nerve truly relaxed at that instant, making even the surrounding air turn soft. Coupled with the warm-toned decor, paper lanterns, and cloth curtains, it completely maxed out the gentle ambiance of Japanese style photography.
Throughout the process, we mainly discussed how to express this sense of "everyday life." In fact, the best photos are often not contrived, but candidly captured. The photographer focused more on capturing natural expressions of emotion and body language rather than chasing flawless facial perfection. As a result, many movements in the photos were made casually—like gently fixing hair blown messy by the wind or leaning against the counter.
The outfit coordination paired surprisingly well with the cafe's overall aesthetic. The blue, white, and yellow colors of the sailor suit cosplay outfit stood out remarkably against the warm natural wood backdrop and green plants without feeling out of place. The photoshoot felt less like work and more like an immersive weekend relaxation.
Photography, environment, lighting, outfit—all elements were just right. Thanks for the perfect teamwork that day. Rather than calling it a photoshoot set, it felt more like documenting a relaxing and healing weekend time.
