[Castorice cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail: Serene Moments Interwoven with Candlelight and Butterfly Shadows

When shooting this Castorice cosplay look, photographer Xiao Fan and I focused primarily on finding the perfect balance between light and shadow. Because the character design inherently carries a profound sense of elegance and mystery, we decided to forgo overly bright conventional studio environments, building instead a low-saturation, cool grey-toned dark set.

Regarding the costume, this outfit is packed with intricate details. The cutout strapping and criss-cross ribbon structure on the upper bodice put tailoring precision to the test, requiring constant care to keep everything clean and aligned during the shoot. The multi-layered white ruffled skirt with purple lining easily shifts out of place when walking, demanding non-stop adjustments. For the wig, I deliberately cut wispy, airy bangs paired with a black thorn crown and Elf ears. This light, translucent aesthetic is something I truly adore.

The post-processing of the butterfly VFX was one of the major highlights of this shoot. To keep the frames lively and dynamic, we left ample dark negative space in the framing for Xiao Fan to composite semi-sheer purple butterflies and falling petals in post. In particular, for the candle-holding pose in Photo 1, we put immense effort into ensuring the candle's glow organically illuminated my face and the surroundings. In reality, two reflector boards were working overtime on set—one reflecting toward the candle to simulate flame light, and another casting a cool rim light from the side to contour my shoulders and arms.

Shooting right at midnight when everything was silent made emotional immersion effortless. In Photo 4, sitting directly on the floor reflecting candlelight and petals placed high demands on costume arrangement—the skirt had to be fully spread out to showcase the layered pleats and purple-piped trims of the Stocking outfit ensemble. What captivates me most about this Honkai: Star Rail character is that romantic, melancholic aura nestled within cool tones. I love using subtle emotional cues—such as capturing a butterfly resting on a fingertip or closing my eyes to feel the warmth of the side light. Cosplay photography is far more than just wearing clothes; it's about channeling the character's atmosphere and soul before the lens.

Of course, to preserve authentic texture, skin details and fabric grain were spared from heavy blurring or airbrushing. We preserved the authentic warmth of the candlelight and the textile grain, hoping to present a Castorice true to realistic lighting in Honkai: Star Rail. The wig had a greyish-white tone that harmonized subtly with the lighting. I also added drawstring and knot details along the collar and cuffs, which look remarkably refined in close-ups. The footwear was another vital component—to match the elegant aesthetic, these white-and-purple heels combined classical charm with solid arch support, rendering gorgeous lines during the shoot. As for props, beyond the candlestick, there was also a long staff, but I chose to blend it into the background, focusing instead on body language and eye contact to convey emotion.
