Among mountains and rivers. Photographer Renzhongdaoyuan brought me to this quiet mountain forest and waterfall environment to shoot a set of Genshin Impact Yae Miko Anime-style photography. Having done mostly indoor studio shoots in the past, stepping truly into natural landscapes felt entirely different.
During early preparations, a lot of thought went into the details of this red-and-white outfit. The halter neck design accented by black piping, along with the circular emblem on the chest, creates clear visual focus. The pink wig paired with the unique fox ear headpiece is the very soul of capturing the character. To keep the headpiece from shifting during Outdoor cosplay, I used plenty of bobby pins and adhesive; though a bit heavy, seeing the final effect put my mind at ease. The makeup didn't undergo drastic changes, focusing mainly on the eye expressions, complemented by self-painted cherry blossom patterns on my arm, hoping to grant this pink fox a nimble yet mysterious charm.
The shoot location was chosen in a garden featuring rockeries and waterfalls. Outdoor natural light in the mountains is indeed much harder to control than indoors, but photographer Renzhongdaoyuan excels at capturing contrast light. Afternoon sunlight filtering through trees onto waterfall mist created a wonderfully soft, diffused light, making skin texture look exceptional and giving the wig a very natural sheen. To complement the natural landscape theme, we specifically brought bamboo folding fans and several pink cherry blossom props. When closed, the fan carries a scholarly elegance, but when unfolded or placed alongside as an accessory, it adds a unique grace to the framing.
There was a little episode during shooting. Finding a suitable sitting or standing posture on slippery rocks posed a real challenge to leg core strength. Although the red-and-white geta clogs matched the outfit beautifully, stepping on mossy rocks made them quite prone to slipping. In the third photo, the moment I looked down at my skirt was actually me stabilizing my center of gravity, yet the resulting image looked delightfully demure—a happy accident. Meanwhile, the standing pose with one leg raised demanded balance while looking off into the distance, taking several tries to catch a frame where both facial expression and body posture felt relaxed.
Mosquito bites are a routine part of Outdoor cosplay sessions, but watching flowing water and vibrant surrounding greenery eased much of the restlessness. The skirt has multiple layered folds that wrinkle easily when sitting down, so I constantly smoothed the hem during breaks to ensure the layered red-and-white fabrics remained crisp. Props like the fan and cherry blossoms were arranged in various spots—scattered beside rocks or held up to block the sun—breaking visual monotony and enriching composition. Combining cherry blossoms with the fan as seen in the fourth photo truly brought dynamic motion to life.
The character Yae Miko inherently possesses a lazy yet perceptive composure, and amidst natural surroundings, we strived to capture that poise and ease. I initially worried the outdoor environment might look too cluttered, but this secluded waterfall forest gave the images a genuine "breathing room." Compared to indoor studio sets, real natural environments carry an innate primitive vitality, while the outfit's red-and-white color palette stood out strikingly against greenery and waterscapes. Reviewing the finished Cosplay photography, whether in serene sitting elegance or lively one-legged poses, it creates a wonderful illusion of the character truly living in nature.
Special thanks to photographer Renzhongdaoyuan for this collaboration, managing to capture perfect moments amidst chaotic lighting. Many times when I thought the light was mundane, the colors rendered through his lens turned out surprisingly beautiful. Post-processing retained authentic vegetation greens and stone grays, making the red costume and pink hair pop vibrantly. Ultimately, the joy of cosplay lies not just in putting on the outfit, but in the journey of bringing imagined scenes to life alongside your photographer in unique environments.
