[Moriya Suwako cosplay] Touhou Project Frog God Girl's Lotus Pond Outdoor Shoot

Today I am sharing this outdoor photoset of Moriya Suwako from Touhou Project.

Choosing to shoot this outdoor location by the lotus pond was largely due to Suwako's inherent vibe of a primitive nature deity. As the apex of the native gods, she appears as a young girl on the outside, but carries a wealth of legends and faith behind her. So I've always been thinking about how to use images to express this feeling of being both close to nature and carrying a hint of divinity.

Let's talk about the styling concept for this outfit first. The main body is a purple sleeveless dress printed with green floral and plant patterns. To increase the lightness of the overall layers, a white long-sleeved sheer outer top with lace trims was deliberately chosen. This lightweight material has great light transmittance under natural light, and a breeze can easily create a very natural fluttering feel. The wide-brimmed straw hat on the head is a very representative accessory, and the red tassels hanging down from both sides add a striking color contrast to the otherwise cool-toned clothing. The red thin ropes and tassels tied around the wrists and props also echoed the color scheme.

For the lower body, white opaque tights were chosen to match black flat Mary Jane shoes. This styling combination is very girlish while also taking into account the practicality of outdoor shooting. The white stockings have a great texture under the lighting, and combined with the lotus leaf props, they integrate uniquely 2D elements with the real environment. To find a suitable shooting spot, we wandered around the park for a long time and finally selected this thick, withered log stretching across the water's surface.

The weather on the shooting day cooperated reasonably well; although a bit muggy, the sunlight filtering through the weeping willows overhead created mottled light and shadows on the water's surface, which was precisely the atmosphere I wanted. I sat on the withered log, my left hand raised to hold the brim of the straw hat, and my right hand holding a huge lotus leaf with a stem. The stem of the lotus leaf was wrapped with purple ribbon and red tassels, and these details were repeatedly adjusted on-site to ensure the hanging arcs looked natural in front of the lens. The hardest part during the shoot was actually maintaining balance, because the surface of the withered log was uneven and right below was the water pool. I had to make the movements look relaxed and effortless while constantly watching my footing, and on top of that, manage the spreading of the skirt and the flow of the sheer outer layer.

In terms of action design, I tried to discard overly deliberate posing and relied more on natural interactions with props. For example, the action of raising my hand to hold the hat brim was meant to naturally showcase the facial contours and arm lines. My legs hung down and crossed naturally, extending the visual proportions through lens perspective. In terms of gaze, I tried to fit the character's sense of a calmness that carries a bit of innocence yet looks down upon all living beings. Instead of deliberately making overly exaggerated expressions, I faced the lens with a calm demeanor, matching the surrounding dense aquatic plants and lotus leaves to present a quiet, cool summer atmosphere in the overall frame.

Outdoor shooting is often accompanied by sudden physical exertion and environmental tests, but seeing the effect of light piercing through the sheer fabric onto the purple dress in the final photos, as well as the unique atmosphere blending mystery and nature belonging to Touhou Project, made me feel that all the early preparations and on-site hard work were completely worth it.
