Today I want to chat with you about the shooting experience of this night sea lantern session. The original intention of deciding to shoot this group of photos was very simple: just to try a night portrait leaning towards emotional expression at the seaside at night, utilizing lighting and a dark-toned environment. The shooting location was chosen on an open seaside tidal flat, and the city lights in the distant background could just pass through the lens to form natural bokeh spots.
First, let's talk about the clothing match. This time I chose a classic JK uniform, a white short-sleeved sailor shirt paired with a dark blue pleated skirt, tied with a red bow tie on the chest. This color scheme looks very refreshing during the day, but at night, the white top and dark skirt can form a strong contrast of light and dark in the dark environment, making the subject more prominent. The legs are paired with white over-the-knee socks and small black leather shoes, which is also to add some highlight areas in the night view, making the overall picture layers richer.
In terms of props, I prepared several transparent glass jars filled with warm yellow LED starry lights, serving as a special lantern prop. The effect of this prop at night was surprisingly good; it is not only an important fill-light source for the picture, but also bears a strong sense of story. When the warm yellow light hits the white top and face, it can well eliminate the stiffness brought by the night light.
In the actual shooting link, night portrait actually has much higher technical requirements than daytime. The ambient light at night is extremely dark; to ensure the clarity of the character's face and the presentation of background bokeh, we used a large-aperture lens. Focusing is the biggest challenge; cameras easily hunt for focus in dim light, so I often lock the focus point in advance or use manual focus to ensure eye details. Because the shutter speed is relatively slow, when shooting standing postures, I try to keep my body stable, such as holding the lamp with both hands, or using the lantern prop to stabilize, or placing my center of gravity on one leg. Sitting and squatting postures are easier to keep stable, like that photo sitting next to a cardboard box. I used an empty cardboard box as an environmental prop, putting the jar inside, which successfully solved the awkwardness of nowhere to place props and also made the picture more lively and atmospheric.
Regarding emotional expression, the night view paired with such attire and props easily reminds people of some quiet, slightly confused, or expectant storyline plots. I tried to relax my body in front of the lens, with my gaze naturally looking at the camera or into the distance, without too many exaggerated expressions; the messy feel of hair blown by the sea breeze instead added a natural and authentic state. During the shooting process, I kept adjusting the height of the jar, using light to illuminate different angles of the face and body, allowing light and shadow to have a natural transition on the character.
The whole set of photos was shot continuously from dusk to late night. The sea breeze blew a bit cold, but seeing the light and shadow effects in the final photos made me feel that all these hardships were worth it. The charm of night portrait lies in its ability to strip away the complex details of the day, leaving only the dialogue between light and shadow, and that unique and focused sense of quietness of the character in the dark. I hope this experience sharing can give a little bit of reference to friends who like night shooting.
