Today's look is a Kokomi custom design outfit for Sangonomiya Kokomi. In official lore, Kokomi has an iconic shrine maiden ensemble, but I wanted to explore a different flavor this time, putting together an academy-inspired custom concept. The core palette continues Kokomi's signature trio of pink, purple, and white. For the top, I chose a short-sleeved white sailor shirt, opting for purplish deep-blue trim lines on the collar so it wouldn't clash while echoing the skirt.
The oversized pink ribbon across the chest serves as the visual anchor of the styling. I fastened a brooch featuring a blue gemstone set in a gold frame at its center, substituting for the Vision element and elevating the delicate detail. For the lower half, I coordinated a high-waisted purple pleated skirt; the pleated design adds lively movement while walking or striking poses. On the legs are classic over-the-knee White stockings, onto which I attached a pair of dainty pink bows at the cuffs to make the entire aesthetic feel more harmonious and cohesive.
As for the wig, the pink twintails look simple on the surface, but styling them was actually quite time-consuming. The structural support for the two large bows on top of the head needed to be sturdy; otherwise, they would easily droop. Along both sides, I pinned striped ribbon bows and pale floral hair clips to enrich the head ornamentation. The outer edges of the haircut were trimmed softly to keep the pink hair looking airy and light.
For the photos, I chose a plain white wall and white cabinets as the backdrop, with a pink cartoon-patterned floor mat creating a bright, clean ambiance. Since these were mirror selfies with the phone obscuring my face, conveying the character's essence relied primarily on body language. For example, resting my weight onto one leg with the other subtly crossed visually elongated the leg line. Lifting the skirt hem allowed the pleats to flare out naturally, adding vitality to the frame. For lighting, I used gentle overhead illumination, which flattered skin texture while rendering the long White stockings soft and translucent.
I was actually quite torn when assembling this custom design, as Kokomi's official character design is deeply ingrained in everyone's minds, and I worried my styling wouldn't do her justice. But then I reminded myself that cosplay encompasses many forms of expression—infusing personal ideas while preserving core character motifs is a delightfully creative endeavor in itself. From curating pieces and waiting for packages to trying them on and making tweaks, every single step was figured out bit by bit. For instance, the collar of the first sailor top was too dark, so I swapped it for a softer shade; the bows on the socks were crooked at first and had to be peeled off and reglued several times. Though the process took quite a bit of effort, snapping these shots in front of the mirror made every hurdle feel worthwhile. While this outfit isn't extravagantly ornate, wearing it brought pure joy and fit my mood for taking photos today perfectly.
