[Mai Sakurajima Cosplay] Elusive Glances and Feelings by the Waterside

This photo set selected a misty waterside outdoor location as its main setting, primarily because this overcast, low-saturation natural environment nicely highlights the character's cool and aloof temperament without making the image feel overly heavy. During the actual shoot, the lighting was diffuse—acting as a natural giant softbox that was particularly suitable for capturing natural expressions and fine details along the edges of hair strands.

Regarding this outfit, the core khaki blazer jacket serves as the visual focal point of the whole look, paired with a white inner collar and a red ribbon tie, bringing out a preppy, British academy style vibe. The deep gray pleated skirt and black sheer tights on the lower half were parts of the look I really loved, which, together with black uniform leather shoes, made standing or leaning postures appear more graceful and slender. The long hair used a gray-white long straight wig, with pink X-shaped and bow hair clips on both sides serving as essential highlight accents—balancing out the coldness that gray hair might bring with a touch of playfulness and agility. The deep blue single-shoulder large tote bag was color-wise very versatile, forming a low-saturation yet highly coordinated color block with the jacket and skirt.

During the shoot, we tried several different interactive poses. My favorite was leaning against the wooden fence looking back, as well as the close-up of reaching out a hand as if attempting to interact. The former naturally demonstrated the leg lines and dynamic-static feel of the pleated skirt through the shift in weight, while the latter carried strong narrative qualities, creating a silent dialogue inside and outside the lens. Capturing the moment of turning around really tested the chemistry with the photographer, as I had to control the head angle, gaze focus, and the shape of the hair and accessories in the wind. When it got windy outdoors, long straight gray hair could easily get messy, so between shots I constantly adjusted the bangs and side strands of the wig to keep the overall silhouette neat and clean.

In post-processing color grading, I intentionally preserved this hazy, soft-light atmosphere without cranking up the contrast for a so-called translucent look, because the originally intended emotion called for a touch of detachment paired with an inner gentleness. To retain the fabric texture of the jacket and the sheer translucency of the tights, a lot of care was put into tones and details, giving the entire photo set both the quality expected of cosplay photography works and the character's effortless atmospheric feel. The wooden fence and distant embankment served as environmental elements, anchoring the horizontal ratio of the frame so that the field of vision naturally extended over the water.

Looking back at the shots after wrapping up this outdoor shoot, I felt that this naturally handled sense of relaxation was precisely a core trait of this character. Without intentionally striking exaggerated expressions or rigid poses, simply standing quietly, leaning slightly, or casting a backward glance could fully present that independent yet uniquely gentle state. During the shoot, I discussed many composition and camera position details with the photographer, adjusting focal length back and forth several times to catch the most suitable half-body and full-body proportions. This seamless back-and-forth collaboration was also a truly enjoyable experience of shooting a full set. A minor regret was the heavy fog over the water that day, leaving the outlines of distant woods and hills somewhat unclear; but on the bright side, this white space made the subject stand out even more. For a faithful character photo set, finding a location that aligns with the spirit of the original work is a huge plus—a waterside outdoor location always brings to mind quiet yet special story moments.
