I actually prepared for quite a long time regarding this classic outfit of Tohsaka Rin. The red high-neck long-sleeve top paired with the black pleated skirt looks like a simple two-piece set, but to pull off the character's aura in reality, the requirements for details are extremely high. The white criss-cross pattern on the chest of the top is the soul of it; I tried several pattern-making versions, and the final version chosen has a slightly three-dimensional texture, presenting a very clear outline under natural light. The black pleated skirt for the lower body uses a relatively crisp fabric, so that when doing squatting or kicking actions, the pleats of the skirt hem can spread out naturally without sticking to the body and losing shape due to excessive softness.
Grooming the wig was also a major highlight this time. Tohsaka Rin's iconic black twin tails paired with two black bows need to have enough hair volume and fluffiness to support that young lady's pride. I intentionally used a curling iron to create a natural curve at the ends of the hair; when the character moves, the trajectory of the curls fluttering with the action becomes very vibrant. In terms of makeup, I focused on enhancing the eye makeup, wearing blue contact lenses to restore the eye color, and choosing a red-brown eyeshadow tone to echo the top. The lip makeup was applied slightly fuller, paired with a silver fine chain and red gemstone pendant, which adds a bit of exquisite embellishment under outdoor natural light.
The sunlight on the day of the shoot was very abundant, and we found an outdoor scene featuring modern architecture and greenery. The high-kick action in the first photo is actually a severe test of core strength and body balance. I needed to stand on one leg and kick forward, keeping my upper body slightly leaning back with tension, with both arms extended back and forth. The photographer used a low-angle upward shot; this perspective not only elongates the leg lines, but also allows the black over-the-knee stockings and thick-soled lace-up leather shoes to be showcased to the maximum extent in the frame. Because the range of movement was large, I repeatedly adjusted my center of gravity during shooting to ensure my body wouldn't shake, which was the only way to capture the moment when the hair and skirt hem flew up.
For the second squatting photo, we wanted to present a sense of readiness during a brief respite in battle. With one knee bent, one hand touching the ground for support, and the other leg stretched out to the side, this posture requires extremely strong stability. To showcase the character's personality, I put a lot of effort into expression management. The character Tohsaka Rin carries a natural aura of pride, confidence, and unwillingness to lose, so when looking straight into the camera, my gaze needed to maintain a sharpness and firmness while keeping my facial muscles relaxed without looking tense.
Overall, shooting dynamic photos outdoors, light is both the greatest aid and challenge. Abundant sunlight makes the red-and-black color blocking more distinct, and the texture of the black stockings is well presented under natural light, but one must also avoid strong shadows destroying the smoothness of the face. We constantly walked around the venue, searching for the best backlight and sidelight angles, utilizing the background's architectural lines and greenery to create a sense of layering in the frame. Every kick and squat required the perfect coordination of clothing, hairstyle, and expression for this set of photos to present such a clean and crisp visual impact.
