Wearing this outfit in the park to recreate Menma is actually a very ritualistic experience. Although it doesn't fully replicate the classic Super Peace Busters uniform from the anime, looking at the bouquet of small white flowers in my hand, the flower crown on my head, and the blue ribbon accent at the collar, I feel like I am surrounded by that familiar summer scent belonging to Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day.
The location for this shoot was chosen in a park with lush greenery, with the goal of capturing that light, slightly playful, and nostalgic atmosphere. To stay closer to Menma's image, the styling specifically incorporates bare feet and a flower crown, details that appear quite natural in outdoor light. The biggest challenge in outdoor portrait photography is actually uncontrollable environmental factors, such as the grass on the ground, changes in light and shadow, and even occasional insect interference; yet, this white dress looks even purer in a natural environment. During the shoot, we had to constantly stop to adjust the ruffles of the dress to keep the frame clean.
It took some effort to keep the position of the small bouquet and flower crown stable while shooting the set on the grass. Especially for the shots of walking barefoot on the stone path, stepping on the rough surface with my bare feet actually gave a very realistic tactile sensation. To capture that moment of holding the bouquet and opening my arms wide, I ran back and forth several times before finally getting a shot where both the movement and expression felt natural. Both the director and the photographer were on the side directing and modulating my emotions. Although the process felt slightly strenuous due to the rough ground, I managed to find that pure sense of joy inherent to Menma through these small interactive efforts.
Everyone says that late summer always carries a bit of regret, and the character of Menma represents a bond concerning reconciliation and farewell. Leaving behind a set of photos here in this white dress is my own private interaction with this work and this character. I integrated my emotions into such a scene; although wearing a white dress and flower crown requires constant vigilance regarding stains and falling petals, the light and shadow feedback when exporting the photos, as well as the hair strands fluttering in the breeze, made this shoot incredibly worthwhile.
