Today's photo set was captured on an overpass during a drizzly night. Having always wanted to try a JK uniform photoshoot capturing a Rainy night atmosphere, I immediately grabbed my gear and headed out when this rainy evening arrived. The camera body used this time was the Sony A7R3, paired with the 35mm F1.4 GM and 85mm F1.8 lenses. The 35GM was primarily used to establish environmental context, leveraging its wide aperture to capture ambient city illumination and falling rain; the 85.8 was dedicated to medium close-ups, melting the background into creamy bokeh to cleanly isolate the subject from the bustling Night portrait backdrop.
Styling-wise, I selected a classic white sailor top with a deep-navy sailor collar, paired with a pleated navy skirt. The top was specifically chosen in a cropped silhouette, subtly revealing a sliver of the waistline to visually elongate proportions. The bottom half was paired with White over-the-knee socks and black block-heeled loafers, creating the classic "absolute territory" (zettai ryouiki) with rich visual layering. The prop was a long-handled transparent umbrella; Clear umbrella photography produces exceptional texture under off-camera flashes, and raindrops beaded across the umbrella canopy were rendered with crystal clarity.
The shooting process proved more challenging than anticipated—strong winds and continuous drizzle kept falling, but this very wind blew my hair into a wonderfully natural, tousled state, elevating dynamic beauty in the frame. Lighting relied primarily on flash to illuminate facial features while preserving the glowing bokeh circles of the city skyline in the background. To infuse the frame with the chilly, melancholic solitude of a rainy night, I dialed the in-camera white balance slightly cooler.
Poses were split into standing and seated series. For standing poses, I mainly leaned against the overpass's white metal railing, wrapping my arms behind my head or straightening my necktie to create natural bodily curves. Seated poses were taken on the wet ground, with legs crossed and extended, or arms hugging my knees, melding vulnerability with expressive visual presence before the lens. The pose sitting in the rain beneath the opened clear umbrella—with the canopy reflecting neon signs behind me, droplets falling across the umbrella, and rain drizzling all around—dialed the atmosphere straight to the max.
In post-processing, I avoided excessive skin smoothing, intentionally preserving authentic skin texture and nighttime noise grain. The color grading favored cool blues with gently boosted contrast, pulling down distracting background light sources so visual weight remained squarely centered on the subject. Transitions between highlights and shadows were smoothed to make the textural contrast between the White over-the-knee socks and black leather shoes stand out even more.
Rain-drenched Night portrait photography certainly tests autofocus and lighting precision, yet the resulting images feel far more vibrant and alive than indoor studio shoots.
