This time I shot Yaoyao from Genshin Impact, a Dendro cutie look. What surprised me the most when I got this costume was the color scheme—yellow and green paired with deep purple-red trim, plus white lantern sleeves and a bright yellow cross knot, visually very lively. The wig features light blonde straight bangs with twin buns, and the small yellow cross clips on both sides along with the patterned circular hair ornaments are the soul; putting them on instantly gave me the feel of the character.

The shooting location was selected in a neighborhood with lanterns and ancient-style architecture at night, and the warm-toned night bokeh as a background comes out exceptionally well. The photographer used a large aperture to blur the lights behind into a golden halo, making it feel exactly like standing amidst starlight. This time we shot several different poses, wanting to show more of Yaoyao's energetic and slightly playful temperament. I personally really like the sitting poses with my cheek resting on my hand, finding them exceptionally relaxed and natural; there is also the movement of opening both arms to embrace the air—though it felt a bit chunibyo during shooting, the resulting effect was very lively. Turning sideways to look back happened to capture the layers of the bokeh, which counts as an unexpected bonus for this night portrait session.

For makeup, I intentionally intensified the eyelashes and eyeliner to make my eyes look larger and more spirited, and the lip color selected was a dewy orange-pink that matches the warm tones of the clothes beautifully. Because the skirt hem is quite short, combined with the dark leg band and short boots, the overall look carries both childish fun and a touch of individuality. The wind was quite strong on the shooting night, making the sleeves very flowing. Although it took a lot of time to manage the wig and hair accessories, seeing the final photos made it feel completely worth it.

This time I didn't intentionally strike very complex poses, relying more on gaze and natural body language to convey the character's emotions. For example, a thinking posture with the index finger lightly touching the chin, or a slight constraint with both hands clasped in front of the chest; every movement was fine-tuned according to the on-site light and angles, trying to keep a sweet girl style atmosphere in every frame. Post-processing didn't have excessive modification, primarily adjusting the color temperature and contrast to make the warm yellow light fuller while preserving the skin's texture.

Actually, the most interesting part of doing cosplay is recreating the feeling of a beloved character in a real scene. Walking through the alleys in this outfit, passing pedestrians would look curiosity-filled a few more times, and occasionally I would meet fellow fans proactively saying hello—that sense of immersion is truly wonderful. I also like several details of the costume, such as the small orange-red pouch at the waist; the white cross patterns on it are very delicate, and the yellow tassels underneath sway gently when walking, adding dynamic movement to the entire look. The red bows at the cuffs and the black patchwork parts also make the entire outfit look more layered.

Before shooting, I habitually do a few sets of expression management. Because when I smile, it tends to be a single-sided upturn of the mouth corner, but Yaoyao needs to be sweeter, so I would intentionally adjust my bite and the angle of my mouth corners to maintain a soft, cute yet un-cloying state. When shooting full-body shots, one must pay attention to the center of gravity of the standing pose, with the leg muscles slightly tightened so that the lines look better without appearing bloated. This time, the photographer also attempted a half-body close-up, with the focus falling on the eyes and hair accessories, making the background bokeh a natural frame, with unexpectedly great results.

In the end, I selected these few images as the final photoshoot, covering sitting poses, standing poses, close-ups, and profiles, hoping to restore Yaoyao's lively, cheerful, and slightly dorky feeling. Every shoot comes with some small challenges, like the wig being blown messy by the wind or headpieces shifting, but these are all accumulations of experience. A good piece of cosplay must not only resemble the character physically but must also exhibit the character's unique spirit in front of the lens; that's where the greatest sense of accomplishment lies.
