This nighttime outdoor shoot for Makima marked a brand-new stylistic breakthrough in my Anime-style photography journey. Urban neon glows and shadowy alleyways naturally weave an atmosphere intertwining cyberpunk grit with metropolitan mystery, making them ideal to convey the character's unruffled yet perilous enigma. While most of my previous shoots relied on natural sunlight, we intentionally waited until total nightfall this time, venturing across several city rooftops and streets to capture those cold, chiseled chiaroscuro contrasts.
Preparing the look required meticulous care. To achieve that signature visual impact, I picked a silky, sleek wine-red straight wig with blunt bangs, leaving face-framing strands along the temples. The makeup centered on the eyes, wearing amber and orange-yellow colored contacts, complemented by deepened and elongated eyeliner and lashes, and finished with high-saturation deep crimson lips to ensure sharp, sculpted facial contours even under harsh artificial studio lights. The attire featured the classic White shirt with a slim black necktie; I deliberately left the top button unfastened and the knot slightly loosened to capture that effortless, everyday nonchalance. The gray plush rat prop deserves special mention—it proved to be an incredible interactive element. During shooting, draping it over my shoulder, dangling it high by its tail with one hand, or cradling it in my palm instantly broke compositional monotony and brought the character vividly to life.
The core camera gear deployed was the Fujifilm GFX100S paired with Sigma 40mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 lenses. The resolving power of the medium format photography sensor delivered an immense advantage for this Night portrait set. The 40mm focal length was ideal for environmental framing, capturing multiple compositions with creamy city bokeh balls near rooftop railings and vending machines. Meanwhile, the 85mm lens was dedicated to facial portraits and half-body close-ups; its wide f/1.4 aperture combined with diffused night lights to produce velvety background bokeh, cleanly isolating the subject from the busy backdrop. Night photography is exceptionally demanding on illumination—key light placement, lighting ratios, and pin-sharp focus all owed their success to the professional control and patient guidance of photographer 伤心肉松小贝, keeping rich shadow details intact without blowing out the highlights.
To ensure diverse compositions, we explored varied high-angle, eye-level, and low-angle perspectives. Along the rooftop railing, wide-angle perspective was harnessed for an outstretched hand gesture, leaning against the wall with a 'shh' finger-to-lip pose, or candidly daydreaming while biting a white lollipop stick; frozen by the shutter, these moments felt far more organic than rigid, deliberate posing. Light refracting across architectural edges and props elevated the textural refinement of the entire series. From pre-production discussions to location shooting, the journey was a continuous experiment in employing modern photographic technology to honor the unique charisma of a 2D icon. The interplay of warm and cool urban night lights alongside the stark contrast of the White shirt, black tie, red locks, and gray prop was something I prioritized deeply in character design. Every shutter release was a fresh exploration, and I hope everyone can feel the singular ambiance channeled through this Night portrait collection.
