[Mahiro Oyama Cosplay] Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister!—Recreating the Lazy Daily Life by the Waterside at Deep Night

A lot of thought went into recreating the details of this costume, especially the "ニート" (NEET) lettering on the T-shirt and the overall lazy home vibe. This shoot was taken by the waterside at night, with a white plush rug spread over the grass. Managing this kind of light and shadow contrast outdoors was quite challenging; with a flash hitting from the front and the background darkened, the city night portrait lights perfectly dotted the background. It took a long time to select the right shade of pink for the wig, and to keep that cowlick at its slightly curved angle, I specially put a support inside. For the eye makeup, I tried a slightly flushed, tipsy look to match the character's dazed yet cute persona. Actually, there were quite a few mosquitoes in the grass during the shoot, and it was a bit chilly when the night breeze blew, but to capture this serene feeling of being alone deep at night, I pushed through to shoot several more sets.

As for how to wear the T-shirt, I didn't intentionally make it very neat; it's just loosely draped to expose the shoulders, which, paired with the plaid shorts and bare feet, instantly brings out that stay-at-home "NEET" vibe. When taking the photos, I relaxed completely without intentionally making any grand or gorgeous movements, just sitting casually on the rug. Gently tracing my cheek with my fingers or resting my chin on one hand was all to present an unguarded daily state.

What I am personally most satisfied with in this set of photos is the balance of light and shadow. The pitch-black water surface reflects the neon lights opposite like an oil painting, and my plush rug acts as a bright anchor in this painting. Not much was changed in post-processing color grading; it was mainly to make the skin tone look soft and clean, preserving the raw, sharp feel of the direct flash. It took me a while to find inspiration for this cosplay set, wanting to express the unrestrained side of the character.

Shooting under this kind of light also places a heavy test on the cosplayer's makeup, because high contrast amplifies any facial blemishes, so the base makeup must be applied very cleanly. I intentionally swept the blush under my eyes, which, combined with the pink contact lenses, made the eyes look more watery and spirited. Although the wig is pink, its texture turned out very silky on camera, and a flying moment was captured when the wind blew by. The "ニート" pink block print on that white T-shirt has a pretty good printing texture, which blends right into the overall frame.

To embody that casual home vibe, I also intentionally rolled up the cuffs a bit to expose the lines of my shoulders and arms. In fact, I've always felt that an excellent cosplay is not just about the clothes looking alike, but the expression must also be natural. In these four images, I tried my best to relax my body and avoid stiffly posing. The movement of reaching toward the camera is meant to break that sense of distance, making people feel as if she suddenly looked at you, creating a close interaction.

Packing up after a night shoot is always exhausting, but looking at this set of photos makes it truly feel worth it. Whether it's the color tone or the atmosphere, it basically achieved the effect I originally envisioned. As a cosplayer who frequently does anime-style photography and cosplay photoshoots, this shooting experience was very special; the contrast between the outdoors and the cozy home vibe instead collided into a quiet late-night flavor. There are no complex props or gorgeous settings in this set; it relies simply on a basic white T-shirt, shorts, and a great state of mind to mindfully bring out that slightly lazy, slightly mischievous trait of the character.
