It happened to rain on the day of Guangzhou CPSP, and since one of the props I brought was a clear umbrella, I simply turned it into the central anchor for our outdoor shots. To suit the rainy ambiance, I specially styled a long wig of white hair with black streaks, applying generous hair wax and setting spray to ensure the black strands on both sides held a natural shape. To maintain its voluminous fullness, I had to detangle the ends regularly on-site to keep the heavy humidity from tangling them.
The wardrobe is richly layered: a white long-sleeved outer garment with chest ruffles spliced into wide black flared sleeves at the cuffs, creating striking black-and-white contrast. The black leather collar around the neck, complete with a miniature padlock, was a standout focal detail that, paired with the white cat ears on top, introduced subtle feline charm. The vertically striped underbust corset laced up criss-cross along the front; wearing it naturally forced my spine upright, and although laced rather snugly, it genuinely helped preserve posture. A small badge pinned to the blue-and-white striped bow on the chest offered lovely visual interest in tight close-ups.
The rain fell steadily, and water droplets clinging to the vinyl canopy introduced a luminous, translucent texture. Using a wide aperture, the photographer melted away the crowd holding umbrellas in the background, leaving behind only the umbrella's structural ribs and the cool-toned streetscape to establish visual depth. We explored varied angles in composition: looking straight into the lens conveyed a cool, distant composure, while a profile shot tilting upward toward the raindrops felt far more relaxed. To accentuate the wig's length, we captured side silhouettes letting the white locks cascade naturally, raising the umbrella-holding hand slightly to create a downward visual flow.
Despite the continuous rain, the diffused overcast daylight was remarkably soft without harsh direct beams, rendering delicate, fine skin textures naturally. The cat paw prints on the clear umbrella echoed the cat ears above, keeping the edgy leather choker and corset from feeling overly severe. In such a bustling convention setting, finding a quiet corner with linear depth was tricky; we often had to pause for passersby to clear or use the umbrella's surface to block crowded hall perimeters.
As an experienced location cosplayer, rainy day shoots pose extra trials—vision gets obstructed and costumes and wigs risk getting soaked—yet that damp, moody atmosphere is nearly impossible to replicate in a studio. The execution of this styling was very cohesive, from the color-blocked wig to the cuffs and waist accessories, aligning every nuance. Color grading was kept honest, preserving the rainy day's cool gray tones to ground the frame in the authentic ambiance of that moment. Convention photos document far more than just character costuming; they preserve the entire journey of braving the rain and adjusting on the fly. Although the outfit restricted movement a bit, bringing my intended visual to life made every effort and all our teamwork thoroughly worthwhile.
