[Ajitani Hifumi Cosplay] Blue Archive Maid Outfit, a Little Cake-Balancing Challenge

Taking the opportunity of Day 3 at the Firefly ACG Expo, I finally shot this Ajitani Hifumi maid outfit cosplay that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. The location chosen was the outdoor corridor on the second floor of the convention center. The cool tones of the modern glass curtain wall matched the black, white, and blue maid dress unexpectedly well, and combined with the natural light, it created a beautifully transparent texture.

Let’s talk about the costume design first. This maid outfit for Hifumi has so many details. The headwear features her iconic yellow halo hair accessory and a white lace headband with black trim. Paired with her light blonde hair and braided style, it took quite a lot of time just to get the hair right. The large sky-blue bowtie at the neckline is eye-catching, echoing the blue piping along the hem of the skirt. The black overskirt combined with the white ruffled apron gives off a very well-behaved yet energetic vibe when worn. For shoes and socks, it's paired with white tights and classic black leather shoes. Walking along the convention venue corridors, it definitely turned a lot of heads, and the best part is that this kind of basic style wouldn't look too out of place even for daily wear.

Huge thanks to photographer @寒蝉-文晋 for his patient guidance throughout the shoot. We mainly used Godox lighting equipment. For the key light, we used a Godox ML100Bi to fill in the light, making the skin tone look incredibly translucent and fair, perfectly recreating the character's feel. For the rim light, we used a Godox AD200proII flash, combined with a slightly low-angle shot, to cast a beautiful golden contour light along the edges of the hair, making the character pop right out of the background with a strong sense of depth. Honestly, balancing ambient light and artificial light in a high-contrast outdoor convention environment really puts one's technical skills to the test.

The shooting process was full of little surprises and fun. For example, that photo where I'm balancing a cake on my head—the little dessert on the tray was actually a prop made of lightweight clay with the word "LOVE" written on it. To maintain head balance while keeping an expressionless, cute, and dorky look, my whole body was secretly exerting force, terrified that the prop would fall. The same goes for the subsequent photos where I'm standing on one leg; I needed to use core and leg strength to stay steady while holding the tray and fruit decorations. This series of poses was actually quite a core workout! While these posed moments look effortless and light in the final photos, we actually adjusted them multiple times on location with the flash stands set up to find the perfect composition and expression.

Choosing the second-floor corridor next to the city's landmark was great not just because of the good lighting, but also because the foot traffic was relatively light compared to the main walkways, meaning it wasn't overly crowded. This gave us plenty of space to work with. The atmosphere at an ACG expo is truly magical; fellow fans would pass by from time to time, exchanging a friendly "Thanks for your hard work!" or snapping a few quick photos. This sense of resonance among anime lovers is one of the happiest parts of doing cosplay.

While sorting through this set of photos, I found myself infected by this bright and lively atmosphere. Although running around in a thick maid outfit during the scorching May weather—and even constantly striking poses on concrete floors—was genuinely exhausting and sweaty, seeing the final images turn out so clean and clear with Japanese-style lighting made it feel absolutely worth it. The wig styling, the costume details, and the clean, bright texture that the lighting technician helped adjust are all perfectly encapsulated in this set of photos. I hope this collection of summer convention memories can convey the passion and joy I felt during the shoot to all the fellow fans who see it.
