Sharing with everyone this time is the swimsuit set of Swimsuit Hoshino from Blue Archive. The core demand of the entire shoot was to restore that lazy feeling of a waterside vacation and the unique coolness of a young girl. To this end, I specially coordinated this pure white ruffled two-piece swimsuit. The overall tailoring is relatively light and form-fitting, and the design of the ruffles visually adds lightness. Paired with that cyan-blue athletic zipper jacket, it can both create a summer outdoor sun-protection atmosphere and bring out the character's unconstrained, casual temperament.
For the wig part, light pink hair strands were selected this time; the luster and smoothness of the hair strands heavily test the texture. To restore Hoshino's classic look, the hair was thinned out and tied into twin-tails, and adorned with red-and-yellow patterned small ball decorations at the hair ties, giving the overall colors an eye-catching embellishment on the pink base tone. The iconic pink semi-transparent halo on top of the head is the soul of the character; this time, I used a lightweight glowing material to make it, striving to present its built-in sense of suspension and fantasy in the frame. For the pupils, a highly saturated blue contact lens was selected, forming a crisp warm-and-cold contrast with the pink hair.
In terms of the shooting scene, we specially chose this high-reflectivity glossy material as the floor. The reflections can truly reflect the sparkling look underwater. Paired with the surrounding inflatable swim rings, beach volleyball, and the blue-and-white striped beach chairs in the background, it creates a light and shadow atmosphere as if being at a holiday resort. When composing, not only was the full-body display considered, but we also intentionally captured some lazy sitting postures and naturally relaxed standing postures. For instance, sitting on a blue-and-white swim ring with bare feet resting on the volleyball perfectly fits the character's vibe of usually looking dazed but making people feel comfortable by the waterside in summer.
Regarding the lighting arrangement, we adopted bright and translucent high-key illumination, striving for a clean image and reducing the clutter brought by strong shadows. This is highly friendly for showcasing the white swimsuit and pink-haired character, weakening potential skin texture blemishes and causing the overall look to present a pure visual language. Meanwhile, I also paid great attention to the extension of movements, without intentionally forcing exaggerated poses, but rather trying my best to find back that casual, slightly sleepy, yet carrying a touch of playful atmosphere of the character in the original storyline.
The process of shooting this set of photos was also full of fun; wanting to keep balance with a halo over the head in mid-air while balancing the relaxation of facial expressions actually tested my core strength quite a bit. However, the final finished photo effect, that casual gaze into the lens and the dappled light and shadow cast by the sun onto the body, are very close to the "summer water uncle" imagery originally envisioned in my mind. This is probably the charm of cosplay—being able to transform a flat character illustration into a real freeze-frame with temperature and texture in the 3D world. To emphasize the clarity of the skin, we kept the base makeup as thin as possible, blending a bit of a dewy water-like glow into the glowing pink and blue color scheme. Paired with fine-tuning from a summer filter, this refreshing visual style truly fits the theme of "swimwear" this time. Personally, I am highly satisfied with the overall completion of this set of photos. The white swimsuit presents soft silhouettes under the summer light and shadow, and whether it's the texture of the pink hair or the clarity of the blue eyes, I hope it lets those who see it feel that summer coolness from the seaside through this summer swimsuit photography project.
