Cosplaying Aria from Zenless Zone Zero at this Shenzhen Anime Festival, from styling and makeup to on-site shooting, deepened my understanding of the character quite a bit. This "Delusional Angel" look of Aria is, at first glance, a refreshing and playful maiden style. The predominant pink paired with teal streak-dyed accents, along with that iconic oversized cyan halo headpiece and black headphones, gave the entire outfit exceptionally rich visual layers.
Great care certainly went into the costume design. The orange star crisscross pattern across the chest acts as the visual centerpiece, which, paired with the central vertical black stripe accents, gives the predominantly white garment a three-dimensional depth breaking out of a 2D plane. The skirt structure is divided into multiple tiers, with cyan and black striped piping testing meticulous craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the large cyan star pendant with eye-like motifs at the waist, despite adding noticeable weight, generated wonderful dynamic tension with just a slight twist of the body during shooting.
The white wings on the back are another highly faithful element. Material selection needed to balance lightness with enough rigidity to support the silhouette, as structural stability is vital in the bustling, shoulder-to-shoulder crowd of a convention. The star-shaped wand in hand similarly echoed the garment perfectly in color and geometry—color-blocked in cyan, pink, and white, feeling reassuringly solid and textured in hand. The footwear featured white platform high-heeled boots paired with teal ribbon bows at the ankles in this White stockings cosplay, mirroring the arm accessories to create a cohesive head-to-toe ensemble.
As for the on-site shoot, the venue of the Shenzhen Anime Festival had distinct characteristics. The ceiling lights formed orderly arrays that created gorgeous circular bokeh through wide camera apertures, ideal for crafting a dreamy Anime cosplay atmosphere. However, convention backgrounds inevitably feature passersby, luggage, and booths, so the photographer and I constantly navigated the crowd to catch optimal moments for dynamic snapshots. To avoid cluttered backgrounds, we often waited for light to hit just right while picking slightly more open areas to let poses stretch out naturally.
For action and posing design, I experimented with several styles: a playful one-handed salute, holding crossed hands over the chest to convey demure charm, and lifting one leg lightly or freezing mid-leap in combat poses. These postures truly tested core control, having to maintain balance and lightness while wearing heavy platform heels and carrying bulky props. Freezing these energetic, battle-ready moments required constant communication with the photographer on-set to capture that most natural, effortless instant.
In terms of makeup, to fit the character's temperament, the base foundation was kept clean and luminous, paired with aqua-blue colored contacts to enhance the anime-styled aesthetic. The long pink wig was carefully styled so the curves of the bangs and sideburns framed the face nicely without obstructing the eyes. Throughout the shoot, whether sitting quietly on a black folding chair or glancing back in dynamic snaps, I immersed myself deeply into the character's psyche. Every cosplay endeavor is about experiencing the unique charm of different characters through precise wardrobe recreation and expressive posing—the most enjoyable part of the entire journey.
