[Sangonomiya Kokomi Cosplay] Divine Priestess of Watatsumi Island, A Moment of Tranquility Amidst Water Glare

The theme for this shoot is Sangonomiya Kokomi, a look I’ve prepared for a long time. Previously, I was constantly deliberating how to recreate the moist glow and aura of wisdom unique to Watatsumi Island while preserving the character's gentle yet steadfast demeanor. For today's set, we set up a cool-toned studio environment featuring Underwater atmospheric photography vibes, using abundant transparent tulle and fluid lighting to simulate the effect of sparkling sea waves. Combined with physical pearls and water ripple elements, the overall visual style strives to stay as close as possible to the pure essence of Hydro.

For makeup, I specifically adjusted the layering of cheek blush and eyeshadow. Kokomi's eye makeup is quite distinctive; emphasizing a deep gaze with subtle pink-orange gradients paired with light-colored contact lenses makes the eyes look expressive yet soft. The wig features a pink-and-blue split color scheme with a contoured bang curve and layered sides. The feather- and fin-shaped head ornaments took a long time to fixate, aiming to keep them in shape without looking stiff. I value costume accuracy highly; for this Cosplay outfit, fabrics with a subtle shimmer satin and semi-sheer organza were selected. To convey a layered texture resembling both marine scales and traditional kimono patterns, wave patterns on the cuffs and hem were positioned by hand. Even the black lace choker around the neck—down to the precision of the small bow and metal buckle—was adjusted repeatedly, because details determine the overall aura.

During shooting, I intentionally picked gentle and relaxed poses without dramatic movements, aiming more to capture a feeling of quiet confidence and subtle warmth. In her lore, Kokomi is a leader managing military and government affairs, yet at her core, she is also an ordinary young girl who gets tired and craves rest. Therefore, I kept my facial expressions natural without forced posing, hoping anyone viewing these photos can feel that relaxing "moment of tranquility underwater." As for props, the pearl chain in hand and white gloves were thoughtfully chosen to stay faithful to the original design while adding light-colored accents in the composition.

In truth, cosplaying characters with complex layering and mixed materials always demands meticulous preparation—from hair/makeup styling to shooting and final retouching. For this set, I refrained from exaggerated soft-focus effects or heavy skin smoothing during post-processing, preserving natural skin textures and fine eye makeup grain, as overly heavy retouching ruins the clear, watery atmosphere. On set, I habitually confirm lighting angles repeatedly with the photographer; for example, we used two cool-toned LED lights with softboxes to simulate top light penetrating into water. The depth of the blue background cloth and tulle drapery was sculpted naturally through lighting rather than pure post-processing compositing.

This time, trying a slightly sheerer outfit layer with an off-the-shoulder cut made the overall look feel lighter and more breathable while maintaining the character's ethereal, divine charm. Choosing this framing and perspective helped focus the composition on facial expressions and upper-body details, as Kokomi's iconic hair ornaments and neck choker are true eye-catchers. There were plenty of small hitches during the shoot—like tulle drapes being blown out of place by wind and securing the pearl chains—but the final outcome was very satisfying. I hope this set conveys my understanding and care for the character, and perhaps inspires some visual imagination regarding an underwater world.
