Shooting this set of photos by the summer waterside, the initial idea was to integrate the character's lively and cute traits into real natural light and shimmering water ripples. Because the selected red-and-white checkered summer swimsuit paired with a pink transparent sheer cape has relatively high color saturation, it could easily feel stifling if placed indoors or in a studio shoot. Therefore, I specifically chose this location with an outdoor water feature for this outdoor photography session. The sunlight refracting through the water surface onto the skin and fabric presents a very natural translucency, which is highly difficult to simulate through post-processing color grading.
In the conceptualization of makeup, the core point was "removing the heavy feeling." Shooting by the waterside most avoids overly heavy makeup, especially under high-brightness outdoor natural light where dense eye makeup and shading can easily look muddy. Therefore, I adopted the currently popular "Japanese-style clear" makeup. The focus was on preserving a dewy and translucent base texture, blending faint pink-orange tones across the eyes and cheeks to soften the overall facial contours. The eye section echoes the character's fluffy horn accessories, choosing reddish eyeshadow and colored contact lenses that match the overall color palette, hoping to present an innocent yet slightly playful gaze in front of the lens.
The hair color is a brown-pink gradient highlight, paired with airy bangs, plus that pair of fluffy pink curled horns and flower hair accessories on top of the head—all to enhance the soft and cute visual attributes of "the little sheep." However, pinning on the horn accessories involved a few twists and turns; since we needed to guard against wind and prevent shifting positions by the outdoor waterside, securing the clips took quite a bit of effort, but fortunately, the final effect turned out highly accurate to the original setting.
The long staff held in my hand, with several realistic pink flowers tied to the top, is not only a concretization of the character's features but also a visual balance point in this composition. Interacting with the light spots reflected off the water surface and complementing the pink flowers, it fills the entire frame with a refreshing midsummer ambiance. To increase the quality yield, the guidance during shooting took quite a bit of time; for example, in the sitting photo, I needed to find a stable rock footing while keeping my back straight, utilizing a posture of shielding the sunlight with both hands to break the monotony of conventional standing poses.
The moment of water splashing is the hardest to snapshot. Because the water level was shallow, even slight movements could kick up large splashes, and combined with the light flares under intense sunlight, it could easily make the facial light and shadow look cluttered. Therefore, throughout the entire shooting process, communication with the photographer was exceptionally vital; we had to repeatedly confirm the shutter timing and the body's forward tilt angle, striving to maintain facial expression management and clarity of features while the water was splashing all around.
The white splashes, raw wood-colored rocks, and mottled light and shadow in the environment, combined with the pink-and-white checkered fabric and sheer tulle, make the overall color coordination very harmonious and vivid. Although this outfit is relatively generous in exposure, it doesn't look gaudy; instead, it exudes a refreshing feel unique to summer. When shooting waterside or swimsuit-type recreation works in summer, everyone can try finding natural scenes with running water like this, which is much more natural than pure artificial splashing. Overall, I am quite satisfied with this shoot; the character's innate liveliness and innocence, along with the summer's coolness, found a well-balanced expression in these images for my Eyjafjalla Cosplay casual cosplay journey through this piece of Arknights artwork.
