Standing before the crosswalk waiting for the green light, surrounded by the bustling city traffic, my partners and I—dressed in red, white, and yellow Zenless Zone Zero themed outfits alongside the inflatable Bangboo costume occupying most of the visual field a few meters away—were conducting today's Cosplay street snap.
This time, we took part in the Zenless Zone Zero and McDonald's collaboration (BFF campaign). Since we wanted to share our cosplay, stepping out of the studio to bring the characters onto vibrant, everyday city streets was a must. Today's theme was Bangboo cosplay. While walking down the street in this gear certainly took some courage, being watched with curiosity by passersby was actually the most vivid and lively part of roleplaying.
Let's talk about my gear first. The red-and-white cropped top paired with a high-waisted miniskirt features a distinctive jagged scalloped hem. Combined with bright yellow over-the-knee boots and headwear, the entire color palette is dynamic and playful, sharing an artistic affinity with McDonald's classic aesthetic in this Long boots outfit. To match the collaboration vibe of the day, I avoided overly complex metal accessories, opting instead for lightweight, breathable fabrics. The boots chosen were eye-catching bright yellow knee-high boots, which not only elongated leg lines but also provided thick soles that alleviated fatigue from standing on rough asphalt for long periods. The other half of our team was the massive yellow inflatable Bangboo mascot; while looking adorably chubby, the suit is actually quite heavy and bulky. Though the visor has breathable vents, roaming the streets in it required the wearer to expend several times more energy with every step just to maintain balance and posture.
Today's shooting location was set on a bustling main thoroughfare in an old district filled with everyday urban life. The background displayed an array of shop signs—from local specialty stores to familiar convenience supermarkets—creating a wonderful visual tension when juxtaposed against anime styling. The photographer had us walk back and forth across the crosswalk to capture the everyday vibe of "Bangboos crossing the street." Unscripted free play often yields the best shots: while the red light was on, we casually chatted and adjusted our outfits curbside; the moment the light turned green, we strode out boldly as if anime characters had stepped directly into reality. A few local aunties passing by curiously asked if we were filming a new TV drama, and upon learning it was a Cosplay street snap, they smiled and complimented how youthful and energetic the outfits looked.
Of course, taking this kind of collaboration cosplay outdoors tests one's composure and focus most. Passing vehicles occasionally slowed down and rolled down windows to watch, requiring us to stay alert and yield safely. The photography assistant stood nearby holding a notice sign to alert passing traffic, while we seized the ten-second gaps in the middle of the road to strike natural, open poses. In fact, I truly enjoy doing cosplay on real city streets; compared to facing reflectors and softboxes in a studio, the natural light and shadow here are far more dynamic and vibrant. The midday sun sliced through buildings to cast a bright beam right onto my white over-the-knee socks, lending extra texture to the sleek leg lines—which is why I insisted on pairing boots with high socks during this McDonald's collaboration. They not only match the character's design language, but also turn heads during outdoor activities in this Long boots outfit.
The inflatable Bangboo suit is actually a tough prop to handle. The performer had to constantly recalibrate their center of gravity because internal air pressure makes the body feel buoyant, making it easy to lose balance if walking too fast. We traversed the crosswalk six or seven times, recalibrating our rhythm with every pass. For instance, when the Bangboo mascot stood behind me, I had to ensure my wig wouldn't rub against the vinyl surface to prevent static or snagging. The photographer asked us to try lining up in a row or staggering positions, even holding the mascot's round little hands in interactive poses. While ordinary in daily life, these actions became clumsily adorable inside an inflatable suit—and it's precisely this clumsy charm that resonates with the endearing character traits in Zenless Zone Zero.
As the day's shoot drew to a close, we took off the bulky inflatable suit and wigs with a deep breath of relief. Though tiring, bringing game characters into real everyday life offers an immersive joy that cannot be replaced in any virtual space. Combining Bangboo with McDonald's added rich real-world fun to this Bangboo cosplay. Life truly needs moments of breaking routine; pausing, strolling, and crossing streets in full costume on city avenues is in itself an exhilarating and brave anime character experience in this Zenless Zone Zero McDonald's collaboration.
