[Onozuka Komachi cosplay] The Red Spider Lily Vow by the Sanzu River

Bringing this Touhou Project Onozuka Komachi cosplay photoshoot to completion took nearly a full month from preparation to the final cuts. On the day of the shoot, we chose an enclosed indoor studio; staging the set to faithfully evoke the Shinigami ferrywoman of the Sanzu River demanded tremendous effort alone. Vast cascading scarlet draperies formed the tonal foundation of the scene, while sprawling withered branches above and around, scattered red spider lilies, and skull models in diverse forms infused the space with an intensely mystical ambiance.

Regarding the styling, this outfit blends classical Eastern motifs with Western dress tailoring. Intricate golden embroidery adorns the cyan-blue base fabric, layered with crisp white ruffles and lace petticoats that lend substantial weight and structure when worn. To faithfully recreate her iconic crimson hair, I prepped a vibrant twin-tail wig with gently volumized ends, finished with yellow hair ribbons bordered in red. For makeup, I deliberately softened sharp facial angles using an earthy eyeshadow base paired with vintage red lips, aiming to project that effortlessly relaxed, languid demeanor unique to the character.

When it came to shooting, lighting was undeniably the defining element. I particularly love the effect where a focused spotlight beams down from an upper angle: the piercing shaft of light cuts through the crimson drapery to illuminate my face and the skull props beside me, generating extraordinary dramatic tension. In framing and posing, we explored multiple angles. In one cut, I recline diagonally on a couch holding my polearm with legs crossed, where the White stockings create a striking contrast against the red and black backdrop—showcasing the layered skirts while amplifying visual dynamism. Balancing in that pose within heavy, layered fabric was physically demanding, requiring constant recalibration of my center of gravity and weapon angle, yet seeing the final frame made every hassle fade away.

Other shots captured praying gestures with hands clasped together, as well as close-ups lying amidst scarlet silks and skeletal remains. During the shoot, I continuously searched for that detached aura lingering along the boundary between life and death—keeping my gaze softly unfocused, carrying a touch of reverie and calm. The photographer assisted immensely with composition, utilizing foreground paper umbrellas and scattered skulls to deepen spatial depth, while wide-angle shots captured the full grandeur of this gothic, Eastern-infused setting. Overall, this Nanjing ACG shoot was an exceptionally fulfilling experience, where refining every nuance from prop placement to garment fitting brought us closer to the soul of the character.
