Before shooting this Touhou Project fan-created outfit for Reimu Hakurei, I had anticipated that the oversized sleeves would pose quite a challenge. During the actual shoot, these voluminous flowing sleeves indeed introduced intense visual tension to the frame, but it also meant redesigning all my movements from scratch. To showcase both the drape and the airy weightlessness of the fabrics on camera, every arm lift and turn required not only core control to keep my balance steady, but also subtle wrist flicks to guide the sleeves into graceful arcs. Because white lace and sheer tulle easily lose their delicate details under bright sunlight, we utilized substantial rim backlighting inside the Kyoto-style courtyard studio to trace the textile textures—preserving depth across bright highlights while keeping shadow folds looking organic rather than flat.
The set design of the Kyoto courtyard harmonized seamlessly with our theme. The wooden veranda, dark roof tiles, and cascading pink cherry blossoms created fantastic depth of field. To align with the lively, youthful spirit of this fan-created concept, I refined the hair and makeup with care. The eye makeup emphasized deeper blending at the outer corners, paired with contact lenses to give the eyes a focused, energetic gleam. For the wig, alongside layering the side tendrils, I added volume at the crown so the silhouette looked full and balanced during low-angle or three-quarter profile shots. Since outfits with massive sleeves can easily swallow one's height visually, I had to keep my back straight throughout the shoot, using subtle waist twists and side-angles to accentuate the waistline.
The paper umbrella prop served as the crowning touch. Because the white fabric occupied such a large portion of the frame, standing rigidly would make the photos look like flat posters. When interacting with the paper umbrella, I explored diverse angles—such as partially obscuring my gaze behind the canopy, or angling the handle so the ribs acted as leading lines. The third photo, where I sit on the wooden floorboards, took considerable trial and error: to flatter the leg lines, I fanned out the skirt hem, subtly revealing the White stockings and petite pink shoes. Combined with a slightly turned seated posture, this formed a stable triangular composition that introduced an airy, breathable charm.
The entire shoot was an ongoing polish of fine details, from the drape of sleeve folds and the tilt of the umbrella to subtle facial micro-expressions. The natural daylight in the Kyoto courtyard, blended with the blooming sakura, established a gorgeous baseline for this set. This shoot taught me so much about finding bodily balance and lens perspective amidst intricate garments and props, ultimately weaving these diverse elements into a harmonious composition.
