Sharing a fan-concept Touhou Project Reimu Hakurei set shot by a mountain stream during early spring snowmelt. This location was chosen because the icy snow blue heavily aligns with the blue-and-white color palette of the outfit. Seeing the snow-covered boulders and unmelted ice layers in the creek valley at first sight felt like finding the perfect natural studio. The temperature was extremely low during shooting, with mountain winds carrying moisture hugging my skin—it was indeed freezing, but this authentic icy environment brought a crisp, cold texture that studio shoots simply cannot replicate, allowing my expressions to naturally blend into a calm, ethereal state.
Regarding costume styling, I specially customized this blue-and-white fan-concept modified shrine maiden outfit. The oversized blue bow with lace panelling on the head served as the visual centerpiece, with fabric luster shifting continuously across different camera angles. The bare-waist design and voluminous kimono sleeves broke away from traditional shrine maiden simplicity, injecting vibrant anime elements. Managing these wide sleeves outdoors tested physical control; keeping them flowing gracefully without motion required fine-tuning arm angles and tension. The lower half paired a white lace-trimmed short skirt with high-thigh white stockings and platform buckle shoes, which not only visually lengthened proportions but also fitted the theme of a snow shrine maiden.
The staff prop was wrapped with translucent blue gauze and flowers, giving it a luminous quality under sunlight that created light-and-shadow interactions with the surrounding snow. Mid-shoot, I switched to a light blue patterned folding fan to assist composition; sitting atop a massive moss-covered rock with a low-angle shot captured leg contours, platform shoes, and billowing skirt hems in a single frame.
For makeup, I applied a minimalist approach to suit the snow landscape, eschewing heavy colors in favor of a clean, translucent base. Eyeshadow and lip shades stayed in pastel tones, paired with a black twin-tail wig to present an elegant yet distinct visual aesthetic. Lighting was crystal clear on the shoot day, with low sunlight casting soft diffuse reflections off the snow onto my face.
The process brought several serendipitous moments: moisture in the snow occasionally frosted fine ice crystals onto my wig, while balancing precariously on slippery, wet rocks added genuine tension. These physical challenges transformed into vivid details in final shots. Beyond static sitting and standing poses, candid captures recorded flowing sleeve swings and billowing skirt moments during walking. Every outdoor shoot experiencing the curious clash between natural elements and anime styling remains an exciting creative journey. Overall, this set met my expectations, fully realizing a winter story atmosphere in Snow cosplay.
