I had been planning this set of photos under the cherry blossoms for quite a while. Arriving right at full bloom, I brought my pre-prepared Red and white shrine maiden outfit to this cherry grove. The branches were heavy and hanging low; walking in, one felt completely encircled by pink, creating an intense color contrast against the bold red of the outfit. Before this shoot, I adjusted several outfit details—especially the fluffiness of the lace sleeves and layering of the skirt. To convey a light and airy feel, I chose breathable chiffon fabric, making it effortless to spread my arms or reach for flower branches in the spring breeze.
The weather was great on shoot day. Natural sunlight made the red tones of the garment appear deeply saturated. However, due to the dense canopy, lighting varied across the grove, so the photographer guided me to tilt my chin up or close my eyes sideways to find even lighting across my face. Reaching up toward cherry blossom branches in the third and fourth photos wasn't easy to execute—not only did sleeves catch on branches, but the shide prop in hand slipped easily. For outdoor Anime-style photography, authentic interaction between the subject and natural surroundings is paramount. I didn't want a flat studio look; instead, I valued the lively, candid feeling of spring wind brushing against my face. Thus, rather than looking straight into the lens, most shots focus on falling petals or light directions, letting visual focus fall naturally onto blossom-covered treetops.
Regarding makeup details on my face and arms, to blend into the spring mood, the eyeshadow utilized soft pink-orange tones connecting with cherry blossom hues. I added a small beauty mark on my right cheek as a signature touch. The crowning touch of this Reimu Hakurei Cosplay styling lies in the oversized ribbon and hand-held shide prop. Hand-strung with tassels, crafting this prop took considerable time to achieve high fidelity. Holding talismans and ribbon decorations in the first two shots was a creative spin on the classic character pose, aiming for a breathing, natural presence rather than rigidly copying a static frame.
Shooting cosplay in a cherry blossom grove is significantly harder than on flat ground. Because branches are dense, we had to find low-angle upward shots where background blossoms completely filled the frame without branches obscuring face or hair ornaments. To capture the feeling of being surrounded by a sea of blossoms, the photographer often half-squatted to calibrate focal length. In the fifth and sixth closed-eye shots, a gentle gust of wind happened to blow by, swaying the giant red ribbon while sending the handheld silk ribbons fluttering. Without rigid posing, I simply stood there quietly; the outdoor breeze paired with falling cherry petals instantly set the atmospheric tone.
When capturing Eastern-style portraits featuring shrine maiden elements from Touhou Project, I favor the natural filter brought by outdoor environments. High-contrast red and white is visually striking, while pink blossom backdrops soften the intensity of red, balancing sharpness with softness. The costume details turned out even better among flowers than during fitting sessions: lace textures and skirt pleats rendered refined light and shadow under natural illumination. Post-processing was kept minimal—mainly adjusting color contrast and softening cherry blossom pinks so the subject blended harmoniously into the scenery.
