From the very beginning of this Chobits shoot, we decided to abandon traditional bright backgrounds and instead search for a venue filled with vintage electronic equipment. Upon entering the location in advance, we found that the large expanse of black cables and vintage CRT monitors perfectly matched Chii's setting as a persocom. To highlight the subject, extensive cool blue fill lighting was used during the shoot, creating luminous reflections across the white skirt hem and White stockings, while warm orange light accented the key buttons in the background, creating a sharp visual contrast against the black, white, and gray machinery.
Prior to shooting, I carefully smoothed out the lace and pink ribbon details on the dress; because the camera was positioned relatively close, the fabric textures would be directly displayed in the frame. The wig was long, glossy straight hair; after putting on the ears/earphones, curling up in the corner allowed me to beautifully express the character's quiet and subtly melancholic temperament.
When taking this photo set, moving around was rather inconvenient due to the messy wires scattered all over the floor, so I mainly experimented with two types of poses. One was sitting amidst the pile of cables hugging my knees, which nicely showcased leg lines and the White stockings while making it easy to capture vacant, bewildered expressions. The other was standing or kneeling before the machines to operate them. In comparison, the final seated shot achieved the best composition—the light fell squarely on the face, and looking toward the lens conveyed the character's signature ethereal innocence without looking stiff, making it the natural choice for the cover.
In post-processing, I mainly deepened the darkness of the cool-toned environment, added soft halos and CRT phosphor screen textures, and boosted the contrast of the white dress and stockings to give the visuals a retro film-era aesthetic. The lace patterns of the dress revealed rich dimensionality at the transition between warm and cool light—details resulting from careful pre-production composition and lighting harmony. Although the complex terrain posed minor difficulties, successfully conveying the visual balance between cold machinery and a warm girl through Anime-style photography made it thoroughly rewarding.
