[Zhuang Fangyi cosplay] Summer Firefly Expo: Arknights: Endfield Under Light and Shadow

Filmed the official photoshoot for Zhuang Fangyi cosplay from Arknights: Endfield at Firefly Expo. The greatsword, elf ears, and long blue-to-red gradient wig offered very rich visual elements. Although July in Guangzhou was quite hot for a convention, the on-site atmosphere was fantastic, making it a great place to cosplay a favorite character.

Detail preparations for this costume focused primarily on restoring the character's signature traits. Particularly the blue leg region featuring sequin-scale textures paired with a Fishtail socks outfit aesthetic and long hair—maintaining hair and accessory integrity at the convention while showing depth before the lens was key. Black platform boots on her feet anchored visual proportions nicely. The massive green-and-gold greatsword felt very heavy, requiring constant posture control while holding the sword to maintain character personality.

The shooting location was chosen in front of a massive floor-to-ceiling glass window at Firefly Expo, with city buildings and distant mountain lines outside providing a great vista backdrop. To adapt light to this space, our Convention lighting setup was specifically adjusted. The key light used a Jinbei HD250max paired with an 80cm octagonal softbox, providing broad, soft illumination flattering for skin tones and upper body details without harsh facial shadows. Side-backlight used a bare Jinbei HD100 bulb for direct flash, outlining hair strands and body contours to form highlights around the blue hair edges for sharp subject separation. Low-position leg light utilized a Jinbei Hi500pro pointing straight at the ground, illuminating the lower body via tile reflections so blue sequin leg ornaments and boot details stayed clearly visible while dampening ambient glare.

Shooting before glass windows allowed floor reflections to mirror props and boots along the bottom of the frame, adding visual depth. The Sony A7M4 matched shutter sync and color rendition exceptionally well alongside these flashes, enabling continuous snapshots of varied stances and sword poses with fast recycle times. The character design of Zhuang Fangyi from Arknights: Endfield is highly recognizable, so this shoot prioritized restoring costume details and prop textures. Assisted by lights, elf ear materials and greatsword engravings were rendered crisply. Poses like pointing the sword tip to the floor or holding it sideways displayed stable quality across light angles.

Regarding holding the greatsword, I was initially worried about uneven force causing imbalance when lifting or holding it upright. Given the wide blade, holding it sideways required micro-adjustments to the angle. Under side-backlighting, golden square elements on the sword reflected nicely, enhancing prop texture. Using the Sony A7M4 body with high-speed sync (HSS), even against bright background lighting, flashes could darken the background to highlight the subject. The main octagonal softbox angle was tuned to ensure even coverage over the upper torso. The smooth floor produced clear reflection effects. Low-angle leg lighting was critical because sequined lower-body materials are sensitive to light—reflected bounce from tile floors lit up specular points without overexposing.

Guangzhou Firefly Expo had a vibrant atmosphere surrounded by many fellow fans, drawing attention during shooting. Choosing a location near windows offered far greater light control. The entire shoot spanned quite a while, trying out multiple angles. Regarding elf ears and hair, because the wig was heavy, venue air conditioning and natural drafts constantly disturbed hair strands, requiring frequent breaks to tidy up. Fortunately, with proper lighting, hair strand edges retained clean rim light highlights. Sony's natural out-of-camera color rendition suited this futuristic sci-fi character setting well. Paired with metallic buckles and leather accessory textures, overall color tones remained cohesive. For sword holding, I favored pointing the tip down to let the floor bear weight while grounding the composition. Postures aimed for crisp, sharp energy, bolstered by side-backlighting for enhanced presence. Combining modern industrial style with fantasy character design, emphasizing metallic luster and fabric drape in lighting was essential. The Jinbei light system exceeded expectations, especially HD250max's key output yielding smooth facial and torso transitions. Shooting during Firefly Expo recorded festival memories; checking out booths and fan works after shooting added to the convention fun. Though carrying gear was heavy, final output rewarded all on-site prep. Lighting matched the location seamlessly, needing only minor contrast tweaks in post to finalize in this Anime-style photography project.
