Deciding to cosplay Bocchi-chan from Bocchi the Rock! at this Zhanjiang Comic Convention came from my desire to experiment with an all-pink tracksuit aesthetic. Preparing for this shoot at the Yunxi Pavilion anime convention, I began dialing in the wig and outfit about a week in advance. Bocchi-chan's pastel pink hair seems straightforward at first glance, but styling it properly takes real attention: the bangs cannot be trimmed too blunt, requiring a slightly unkempt, piecey texture, and I studied tutorials for ages on how to naturally secure that tiny gathered side-tail. The blue-and-yellow block hair clip serves as the ultimate focal anchor of the look—without it, character recognition drops sharply. I pinched the ends with hair pomade to keep the silhouette from looking stiff, aligning with her persona of someone who rarely fusses over hair care.
For makeup, Bocchi has striking blue eyes, so I selected deep cobalt contact lenses with high color payoff. The eye makeup was kept understated, focusing on illuminating the lower waterline and aegyosal; blush was swept beneath the eyes and across the tip of the nose to simulate an easily flustered, anxious flush. I also styled long, pointed white press-on nails so hand gestures would stand out with distinctive character flair before the lens.
For wardrobe, I opted for an oversized pink zip-up track jacket; the roomy drape made my frame look petite, perfectly embodying Bocchi-chan's habit of curling into quiet corners. The staple black undershirt and charcoal pleated skirt completed the base uniform. The blue backpack is actually my daily commuter bag, but its color matched the palette so seamlessly that I repurposed it as a practical shoot prop.
On the day of the convention, the hall was bathed in cool-toned blue lighting, which harmonized remarkably well with Bocchi's slightly gloomy yet endearing mood. When the photographer directed me to pose, I felt a bit awkward about what to do with my hands at first. Then, channeling Bocchi's social anxiety flare-ups, I hunched my shoulders inward, flashed a bashful peace sign or pointed forward, and let my gaze drift slightly vacant. I kept body language reserved and non-confrontational—slightly rounding the chest or clutching both hands together naturally telegraphed her personality traits. Walking across the exhibition floor in this tracksuit truly made me empathize with her urge to hide away in shadowy corners.
Roaming the halls, several attendees recognized the coordinate and stopped by to exchange friendly greetings. Some remarked that this youthful version of Bocchi looked delightfully tiny and adorable, which felt like wonderful validation for the styling effort. Across the photo selects, I intentionally included varied compositions: the tight opening portrait highlights the contact lenses and soft makeup details, while the second and third mid-length captures focus on coordinate styling and timid body language. In post-processing, I avoided heavy skin smoothing to retain authentic skin texture, shifting the color temperature subtly toward cool cyan to match the venue's ambient fixtures. These Convention photography selects document this fun cosplay milestone—I hope the overall mood captures that one-of-a-kind, lovable awkwardness!
