Shooting the character of Fugue was a distinctly different experience compared to my past shoots, largely due to the elaborate environmental set design required this time. From the gradient of the wig to the tactile fluff of the beast ears, a significant amount of time went into polishing the hair and makeup. The red-and-black gradient hair rendered very natural layers on camera, while the black ears atop my head revealed crisp fur textures under the lighting; to keep them three-dimensional from every angle, I added hidden internal supports. The prints and golden accessories on the attire feature countless details—especially the golden floral ornament at the waist, which required careful adjustment each time to avoid warping or falling off—and thankfully the final visual fidelity turned out great.
The shooting set was arranged with an immersive traditional Japanese courtyard aesthetic, featuring pink petals drifting in the water basin, surrounded by wooden sliding doors and stone lanterns. Capturing that languid, effortless charm took quite a bit of effort from both me and the photographer. The wooden pool and bamboo water spout setup brought immense atmosphere; simply stepping onto the damp wooden floor immediately immersed me into the character. Although the water was actually cold, visually it conveyed the warm, soothing feel of a hot spring. The photographer excelled at seizing unscripted moments—such as sitting in the pool flicking hair strands or resting a chin on the edge of the wooden table—all captured in a naturally relaxed state.
Beyond the hot spring water features, the ropes and stone lanterns in the set were utilized to the fullest. The shot standing beside the rope frame tested my stamina, as I had to grip the rope to maintain steady balance while managing my expression and gaze, but the resulting agility made me very happy. Finally, the shot sitting on the wooden deck holding small props, framed by the pink blooming branches behind, felt effortlessly story-rich. Throughout the shoot, I paid close attention to the drape of the sleeves and foot placement, as minor details can disrupt the visual harmony when magnified. As one of my high-fidelity cosplay sets, I did plenty of homework on Fugue's subtle micro-expressions and mannerisms before stepping in front of the lens.
Steam and water surface reflections introduced technical challenges to the shoot; light refracting off the water required continuous angle adjustments to prevent heavy facial shadows. Fortunately, my chemistry with the photographer was seamless, needing few words to know the desired shot framing. A narrative-driven shoot like this is naturally more tiring than posing before a plain backdrop, as it requires balancing body posture while overcoming physical constraints from the set. However, seeing the final collection made every bit of effort worthwhile. The true magic of cosplay lies in using wardrobe, hair, and set design to briefly step into a slice of another character's life, channeling their distinctive spirit to the audience through the lens.
