This set of Sunohara Kokona cosplay consists of convention photos shot at this year's Firefly ACG Expo. The lighting on-site was very translucent back then. To avoid the crowded flow of people in the central halls of the expo, we specifically found an outdoor street on the periphery of the venue for the shoot. Outdoor lighting is much more controllable than indoors, and with the Sony a7m4 paired with the FE 50mm F1.2 GM large-aperture lens, both the facial clarity and the background blur transition have a great texture. Personally, I really love this clean and bright visual tone.
In terms of costume, this time a sleeveless vest with fine black-and-white stripes and a matching pleated skirt were selected, paired with a large sapphire blue bow and a yellow star brooch, making the overall visual focus very clear. To bring the character image closer, I specially adjusted how the sleeves and gloves were worn; the cuffs were slightly flared into ruffles. Along with the white over-the-knee socks and the black high-heeled pumps with bows on my feet, the overall styling retains some of the playfulness of a magical girl while carrying a bit of a uniform feel. The highlight reflection of the white over-the-knee socks under the sunlight makes the leg lines look more elongated, which is one of the details I'm very satisfied with in this photo set.
The star wand prop is also key to elevating the screen's atmosphere; there are plenty of interactive movements with the little wand during dynamic candid captures. For example, the shot where I lean against a traffic cone with one foot kicked back, and the action where I half-squat and extend the wand toward the camera—these poses can make the photos look livelier with a slice-of-life feel, rather than just standing rigidly on the spot. Especially for movements like standing on one leg or shifting the center of gravity to one side, utilizing the fluttering feel of the costume's skirt hem and sleeve straps well can create a dynamic tension in a static picture.
Eye makeup and the wig are also crucial parts of this kind of outdoor shoot. The flaxen-gold colored contacts make my gaze look more spirited, paired with the grayish-brown animal-ear hair accessories and silver-white long straight hair, with the hair tips transitioning quite naturally from a side view. Because the outdoor light was relatively strong, I added a slight soft-focus effect to the highlights so that the makeup wouldn't look too heavy even under the sun, making the overall skin texture look finer and more realistic. The cat-ear styling along with the hairstyle allows the character's signature elements to be showcased very clearly under outdoor natural light.
Since it was at the Firefly ACG Expo, the surrounding environment inevitably included passersby or roadblocks. For instance, the orange traffic cone in the photo was originally a venue facility, but it happened to serve as a fulcrum for the frame, adding a bit more slice-of-life feel to the composition. In post-color grading, the photographer preserved the green trees and bright sunlight, making the color tone of the entire set present a very fresh and comfortable early summer atmosphere. Utilizing the 50mm focal length paired with a large aperture, the character's facial expressions and costume textures were completely preserved, while the cluttered elements in the background were handled very cleanly.
This shoot made me deeply feel that although the convention venue is very crowded, as long as you find the right light direction and make good use of the perspective of the 50mm focal length, you can also take very clean half-body and full-body shots outdoors. Furthermore, the benefit of outdoor shoots is that the diffuse reflection of natural light gives the white over-the-knee socks a more translucent reflection texture, which is a completely different feeling from an indoor studio shoot. Many times, slightly changing the shooting angle and maxing out the background blur can give these convention photos a unique texture, rather than making them look like simple check-in snapshots. I hope to continue trying such clean and slightly lively outdoor styles in the future.
