[Viviana Cosplay] Candlelight and Antlers, Frozen in the Convention's Light and Shadow - Image 1
[Viviana Cosplay] Candlelight and Antlers, Frozen in the Convention's Light and Shadow - Image 2

Freezing this set of photos amidst the hustle and bustle of the Yuyuan Anime Convention, looking back at the finished shots on the screen while packing up the gear, I still feel the lighting coordination fits this theme perfectly. This cosplay photography session challenges the styling of the character Viviana. From wig trimming to the stability of the antler headwear, and further to the gravity distribution of this large cloak when walking, everything underwent repeated design and adjustment. The model, Wei, beautifully mastered the temperament of the outfit itself, while the retoucher, Lan Sheng, enhanced the texture to match the quiet cathedral atmosphere we wanted.

The visual focus of this outfit lies in the collision of black, white, and red. The outer white cloak features black geometric totems, with an irregular bright red color block hem, paired with strongly supportive pure white high-heeled boots. The antler headpiece is quite large, so during the shoot, I had to stay mindful of my head angle at all times to avoid looking top-heavy in the frame. The candle prop not only enhances character recognition but also serves as a crucial visual anchor during composition. The falling red petals in the finished Image 1 are atmospheric elements intentionally added by the retoucher during post-processing, perfectly echoing the character setting's motif of interwoven lamplight, holiness, and shadows.

Compared to the highly cinematic light and shadow atmosphere of Image 1, I personally lean towards the authentic behind-the-scenes snapshot in Image 2. At that moment, I had just finished shooting a set of poses and sat down on a metal folding chair in the studio to recharge. The tripod, reflective umbrella, and harsh key light behind me were all recorded by the lens, with the antlers reflecting an exceptionally brilliant sheen under the overhead studio lights. This contrast between the mystery before the lens and the down-to-earth reality behind it forms a fascinating juxtaposition. Many fellow fans who saw the finished photos wondered if the costume was heavy; in reality, walking around the convention carrying this gear is highly physically draining, especially with the sound of the boots stepping on the studio floor. I even specifically reminded the support crew to help watch out so the cloak wouldn't get caught in the chair.

Initially deciding to shoot this work was because I hoped to match the character's unique chill and determination through body language and light. People often say that certain works or characters have a soul; during the creation of this set, the photographer and lighting technician also experimented with various lighting setups. Backlighting combined with the side light filtering through the window perfectly outlined crisp silhouettes on the white clothing while retaining rich details in the dark areas. The benefit of indoor shooting is high controllability, allowing us to repeatedly polish the desired lighting effects without relying on natural weather. However, to maintain the form of the candle prop that day, the arm holding it grew sore for quite a while, and while painstakingly holding a cold, aloof expression, there was a moment I almost broke character and laughed.

Looking back at the two days of shooting, from the trial makeup to the final selection, this set of convention photos crystallizes the hard work of every single team member. Photography is not merely for recording; it is about materializing the image of the character understood in one's heart. Thank you to all the support staff for their hard work. Next time, maybe I can challenge an attempt with larger movements, but until then, let these few photos leave behind a small memory belonging to this convention.
