Prepping for this Murasame cosplay set took two full weeks, spanning wig trimming to garment adjustments. Capturing that gentle yet aloof, tranquil essence unique to Senren*Banka demanded extraordinarily delicate visual rendering. The mint-green wig needed layered blunt bangs, keeping the ends light and airy rather than heavy; when pinning the purple star hair ornament, I had to ensure the gold chain and crimson ribbons draped naturally. For makeup, I softened the harshness of sharp eyeliner, switching to softly smudged reddish eyeshadow paired with crimson contact lenses to mirror her tender yet steadfast gaze. Because the synthetic strands reflected studio lights easily, I had to continuously adjust my head angle to find natural shadow transitions that gave the fiber the texture of real hair.
The wardrobe was filled with intricate details: the purple undergarment, the voluminous black haori robe, and that strikingly vibrant orange-red obi sash created sharp color separation with substantial physical weight. To showcase clean silhouette lines before the camera, I practiced wielding the katana using wrist control; the prop carries noticeable weight, and improper grip posture quickly makes poses look stiff. Seated atop the white cube pedestal, I extended my legs naturally, using the brown strappy sandals and leg lines to heighten visual tension. During standing sword-slashing poses, the photographer and I coordinated angles repeatedly to make the haori hem and long locks billow, ultimately using high-speed continuous shooting to freeze those kinetic peaks. The scabbard was jet-black, and the reflective metallic blade emerging from the sheath created brilliant contrast against the dark garments, allowing slight wrist tilts to convey varying levels of martial intent.
My greatest realization throughout this shoot was that gentleness is not weakness, but a resolute inner power. Murasame has extensive quiet, internal nuances, so I avoided exaggerated poses, choosing instead to communicate subtle emotions through eye contact and micro-expressions. Multiple times mid-shoot, I found myself thoroughly lost in that serene stillness, feeling as though the blade in my grip and the garments on my shoulders were extensions of my own body. While the studio's solid backdrop was minimalist, it perfectly elevated the silhouette and prop finishes, balanced by even illumination that showcased fabric drape and chromatic depth. The seated frame on the white cube required immense core balance to maintain fluid leg lines and blade posture—keeping the facial muscles relaxed while the physique remained disciplined truly tested core stamina.
Standing in those strappy sandals for hours made my soles ache, and hoisting the blade strained my arms, but seeing the final frames made every bit of toil worthwhile. Exploring various sitting and standing postures helped channel her seemingly gentle yet profoundly unyielding spirit as a true Japanese-style girl. These photos chronicle my contemplative creative journey with this character, and I am immensely grateful to the photographer for catching these fleeting moments. Moving forward, I will continue pouring care into garments and props, approaching every 2D photo session as an opportunity to deepen my character understanding and hone my camera presence to deliver even better works.
