Sorting out the convention photos from the Qingkong Academy Season Anime and Game Festival, this set of Flandre Scarlet Cosplay appearances is highly satisfying. I've selected a few representative actions for daily sharing.
During the early stages of preparing the costume, the focus was primarily on recreating that sense of exquisiteness. Although this dress mainly features large areas of red and white, the choice of fabric prioritized a balance between drape and fluffiness. Layers of soft tulle were used for the skirt hem so that it forms highly natural layers when sitting or spreading out the arms. The ruffles on the hat were also meticulously stacked, and with the embellishment of the red bowknot, the entire look appears both full of childish charm and carries the elegance of a porcelain doll. The two teddy bear head decorations at the waist serve as a finishing touch, maxing out the liveliness of the Scarlet Devil Mansion's second young mistress.
I brought quite a few props this time: a teddy bear, an apple, and that string of colorful geometric crystals. During the shooting process, photographer WiFi was highly adept at using these small props to guide movements. For example, the sitting posture in the picture, holding the teddy bear in my arms with that expression, doesn't need to be consciously acted out; this kind of body language close to the character's personality is often the most natural state. Additionally, that string of geometric crystal ornaments catches reflection exceptionally well under the relatively cluttered lighting conditions of an anime convention, making it easy to form a visual center of gravity in the frame, so it kept company alongside me throughout the entire photo set.
When shooting this part, the lighting contrast in the exhibition hall was actually quite large. There were many high-brightness industrial-style lights at the top of the hall, which would cast deep shadows on the face when projected down. Fortunately, WiFi brought comprehensive fill light equipment, and combined with the ground itself being a dark, reflective material, the skin texture of the character in the final images was kept very clean. The red leather shoes and white lace socks also revealed great details under this ground reflection.
For the styling, I chose a warm-toned golden wig, lightly teasing it to create a bit of a cluttered airy feel so that it wouldn't look too heavy. The makeup primarily focused on highlighting the spirit of the eyes, and the pairing of colored contacts also gave the character a touch of mystery. Looking at the entire shot set, my favorite is the one biting the apple, or the look sitting on the carpet holding the teddy bear, because that allows all elements (costume, bear, apple, crystals) to be assembled within a single frame.
Regarding the scene scheduling for this shoot, I also have a small insight to share. The foot traffic at the anime convention was actually very dense, making it not easy to find a clean background for shooting. We chose a relatively open corner of the exhibition hall, utilizing those rows of hall illumination lights high above as light sources for background bokeh. The photographer adjusted the camera position to a height level with the sitting posture, which can better capture the fluffy form of the skirt hem while avoiding filming the cluttered booths and passersby nearby. To cooperate with the reflection of that string of crystal props, a side-front lighting angle was specifically arranged on-site, making the color blocks look more three-dimensional amidst the interweaving of light and shadow, which can better highlight the clothing layers compared to rigid flat front lighting.
In fact, wearing this costume to maintain a sitting or squatting posture is a heavy test of physical strength. A large skirt hem means movement is not very convenient, especially since the crystal on that long rod would bump into surrounding supports when moving. Fortunately, the entire shooting process went smoothly. Every time I shoot this kind of Anime cosplay character, I try my best to re-examine some minor details in physical movements, like the hand shape when holding an apple or the focus of the gaze when looking at the lens, striving to make the visual presentation fit the character as much as possible.
Reviewing this set of photos, although affected by objective factors such as a noisy environment and limited lighting on-site, under the cooperation of the photographer, the final outcome basically reached the initial conception. I hope to have the opportunity to use this character to record more memory-filled moments in subsequent anime conventions through convention photography.
