This New Chinese style photography styling with crimson makeup tested our team's synergy in post-processing and lighting design. To capture the vast emptiness of a 'fleeting dream', we deliberately chose high-contrast cool blue backlighting, creating a striking visual clash against the expansive vermilion garments. The headpiece was remarkably heavy—nearly a kilogram of metallic tassels, pearls, and jade ornaments; maintaining a steady expression under such intense studio lights was truly an endurance test.
During this Cosplay photoshoot, we didn't deliberately aim to replicate a specific character, but rather wanted to embody the obsession and void of 'wishing only for your salvation' and 'floating in a dream despite knowing it is in vain' through this attire and gaze. We shot over a dozen takes for the flowing red fabric movements, repeatedly fine-tuning the hand tension just to ensure the fabric folds cleanly framed the upper body silhouette without obscuring the intricate details of the headpiece.
The core of this photoshoot lay in the highlights. We dialed up the brightness of select light sources exceptionally high, deliberately preserving overexposed halos to craft a hazy, surreal ambiance for this Dreamy Chinese-style photography. The background under cool light appeared deep and mysterious, while the subject was enveloped in warm crimson and golden glow—this contrast gave the whole set an ornate yet subtly uncanny allure. The embroidery on the garment was exquisitely detailed, particularly the avian motifs across the chest and skirt hem, which sparkled delicately under refracted strong light alongside the golden tassels.
Doing a Cosplay photoshoot is often far more than just wearing a costume and taking pictures; it feels like externalizing inner emotions. Especially when reflecting on notions like 'let me guard these memories alone' and 'it is merely a grand dream', I was even more determined to portray an expression imbued with sorrow, compassion, and stubborn obsession. During most of the shoot, I remained in a detached, tranquil state of mind, letting the photographer's shutter capture fleeting frozen moments. The final images truly preserved that glass-like, fragile vulnerability in this Atmospheric photography session.
This Chinese ancient style cosplay styling also featured clever tailoring around the shoulders, lending an upright, poised posture when worn, while subsequent low-angle shots highlighted facial three-dimensionality. The cover image I selected is a high-angle overhead shot—a perspective that truly tests facial bone structure—yet the jawline remained crisp under the strong lighting. Throughout the cosplay process, we are not merely imitating, but reinventing an aesthetic through light, shadows, costume, and makeup.
Post-processing was kept minimal, as most of the mood and texture were shaped directly on set using reflectors and multi-source lighting setups. The collision of cool blue and warm crimson is a classic fusion of Hong Kong vintage aesthetics and traditional Chinese style. If given the chance in the future, I'd love to take this look into misty rain or dry-ice settings to see what kind of dreamscape unfolds amid water reflections and billowing smoke. A photo is inherently a vessel for a dream—a dream focused on tassels, embroidery, and phantasmal light and shadow—making this a deeply fulfilling creative journey.
