Nighttime grottos always carry a hint of surreal quietness. This set of Hanya photoshoots captures about seventy to eighty percent of that desolate and serene atmosphere. Experimenting across different scenes and extreme light and shadow conditions, the final result holds more dramatic narrative tension than expected.
First, about the makeup and hair. To fit the character's temperament, which lies somewhere between aloof and an underworld judge, the makeup artist deliberately intensified the smudge of the eyeshadow and eyeliner. Paired with the silver-blue straight wig trimmed closely to the face shape, and the dark beast horns with red tips on both sides, the overall facial contours were sculpted quite sharply, yet without losing a woman's unique sense of fragility. The lip color utilized a darker, low-saturation palette, echoing nicely with the silver hair.
The design of the costume is one of the biggest highlights of this photoset. The top features a large area of off-the-shoulder and deep-V tailoring, combined with an exquisite metal choker and the texture of blue, black, and red patchwork, which is incredibly rich. The negative space on the collarbone and shoulders perfectly showcases the character's slender lines. Although the outfit carries a heavy fantasy decorative feel, it is quite convenient to move around in. The lower half's irregular red and blue skirt hem is paired with a classic black tights outfit, and the legs are specifically adorned with black straps, making the leg lines look even more elongated. The black open-toe sandals on her feet feature metal straps, making the overall look gorgeous yet retaining a combat aesthetic.
We divided these photos into three different scenes to shoot. The first set is the outdoor scene on the lawn under the moon, where the photographer used an ultra-large aperture to create a huge, soft bokeh effect of the moon in the background. Combined with the red Lycoris flowers growing on the ground, it created a highly dreamy and quiet visual experience. The second set is the rainy night street scene, where a transparent long-handled umbrella, drifting rain threads under the light, and the highlighted blur of the background streetlamps delivered the mood perfectly. The final set is the indoor scene on the cave stone steps; for this one, we adventurously used a large amount of cyan-green cold light sources as the main light, shining directly from the side onto the character and the moss-covered rocks. The scarlet light spots occasionally peeking through the background created an extremely intense contrast between warm and cold colors, giving the entire photo a distorted sense of interwoven cyberpunk and fantasy.
Quite a few challenges were encountered during the shooting process. First was the focus and aperture control in low-light environments, especially for the rainy day set. Capturing clearly falling raindrops while ensuring the sharpness of the character's face heavily tested the photographer's skills. Second was the insects on the grass in the woods; we suffered quite a bit while crouching and climbing rocks for a long time. Additionally, regarding the tendency for the black tights to show reflections or absorb ambient light on camera, we made numerous fill-light adjustments and angle tweaks during the shoot to finally present this clear, transparent texture.
Being able to capture the character's deep, detached, yet calm and serene expression made this trip entirely worthwhile. As a cosplay creation with high demands for details and atmospheric photography, I hope this persistence and refinement can convey the emotions I wanted to express.
