Heading into this nocturnal outdoor shoot for Dolia from Honor of Kings, our foremost concern from the outset was managing illumination. Capturing the organic essence of a deep-sea mermaid in nocturnal settings relies heavily on lighting setups and environmental staging. The dress was constructed from cascading layers of pale blue chiffon tulle, stitched with white seashells and starfish, yielding an airy, buoyant sway in motion. The wig was chosen as a long, vibrant blue style with gentle curls, and the iconic ahoge hair antenna at the crown was meticulously heat-set. For cosmetics, beyond the essential vivid blue contact lenses, white teardrop droplet gems were applied across the cheeks to reinforce the mermaid aesthetic.
Arriving on location, we found a corridor bathed in dynamic neon signage. Violet key light cascaded downward, forging a rich contrast against the cyan tones of the wig. To embody the narrative concept of a deep-sea mermaid reaching out toward the viewer, I repeated the outstretched hand gesture across numerous takes. When extending the arm straight toward the camera lens, keeping shoulders relaxed was vital to prevent awkward stiffness. The hand required a soft release—fingers gently curled with a subtle curve through the wrist—to simulate floating up through ocean waters. In Photo 2's full-body standing frame, I held my stance patiently across extended exposures to freeze the sheer skirt at its most organic flutter, while the 'ROCK' neon sign behind anchored a sleek, modern night vibe.
The core challenge in night photography lies in preserving frame cleanliness under high ISO settings while controlling uneven skin tones caused by strong environmental bounce. We leveraged nearby reflective surfaces as passive fill sources, ensuring facial features caught subtle specular highlights even in shadowy conditions. The side-profile close-up in Photo 3 was specifically designed to highlight hair texture under violet backlighting, where the translucent halo around edge strands looked truly breathtaking. Post-processing avoided aggressive color manipulation, focusing instead on neutralizing harsh color casts introduced by ambient violet spill while preserving the saturated pop of the neon palette. From garment textiles and wig architecture to nocturnal lighting orchestration, every element aligned to achieve our creative vision. I genuinely love how this atmospheric Dolia photo series turned out.
