We prepared thoroughly for this shoot, settling directly on this ancient forest for the weekend. The gear used was a Sony a7C II paired with a 28-75mm F/2.8 G2, an exceptionally lightweight and versatile combo for outdoor photography. The 28mm end captured the sprawling, twisted drama of the banyan tree roots, while the 75mm end made snapping facial and half-body close-ups effortless. Moreover, the f/2.8 aperture separated subject from background cleanly amidst the forest's tricky lighting.
When commissioning the costume, special care was given to tailoring and details: the blue-and-white color-blocked dress paired with classic striped over-the-knee socks, while the giant white fluffy tail on the back was essential to accentuate that playful bunny-girl aesthetic. Because of the tail's substantial volume, adjusting my center of gravity while posing required particular caution. For instance, in the shot bending forward and glancing back to showcase the tail, I had to ensure the dress draped into a lovely silhouette, keep my balance, and guard against any wardrobe malfunctions simultaneously.
The shoot took place around 4:00 PM, when sunlight filtered through tree canopy gaps to create a natural, dreamy backlight. The halos in photos 2 and 3 relied purely on natural sunlight. Faced with intense rim light, I used spot metering locked onto my face, ensuring accurate facial exposure while letting the foliage and sunlight behind gently blow out to evoke that fairy-tale wonderland aura. In photos 1 and 4, the dapples of light falling across the tangled roots and skirt hem added gorgeous texture.
To better suit the narrative of stumbling into wonderland, I experimented with varied body language. Crouching beside the roots with hands slightly spread conveyed the cautious alertness of someone inadvertently wandering into an enchanted forest; balancing on one leg, hand gestures shifted lighter and more buoyant, harmonizing with the golden curls to project a lively spirit.
Capturing Daji's blend of enchanting allure and naive innocence from Honor of Kings required careful facial expression management. It couldn't simply be cutesy, nor overly mature; the shifting of gaze and subtle curve of the lips needed minute refinement. In photo 2's glance back, the eyes carry a playful, flirtatious spark while the overall posture preserves a girlish charm. The seated pose in photo 4 depicts a languid rest after frolicking in the woods, extending legs naturally so the light traces clean leg lines and the texture of the striped Stockings.
The soft forest floor with its rich carpet of soil and fallen leaves enriched the frame's color palette. Yet outdoor location shoots present their challenges: swarming insects and uneven terrain. Around deep dips in the roots, high heels proved unstable, requiring the photographer or assistant on standby to offer a stabilizing hand. The crisp blue-and-white dress popped brilliantly against the deep green forest backdrop with striking color contrast.
The fabric caught sunlight beautifully—the blue textiles held deep depth in shade while glowing vibrantly under direct light. The 28-75mm focal length proved ideal for environmental portraits, eliminating constant lens swaps and boosting shoot efficiency. In dappled light, a lens hood was indispensable to keep the frame from washing out into hazy gray.
During post-processing, the surrounding environment was gently vignette-darkened while the face and lit planes were lifted, preserving the woodland's natural depth without ruining the organic mood. The entire session was a joy; despite the wild, humid environment, seeing the finished set made every drop of sweat worthwhile. The contrast between ancient towering trees and a delicate figure, topped with bunny-girl styling, brought fairy-tale wonder fully to life.
