Pre-production for this Himouto! Umaru-chan Anime cosplay actually took a lot of thought. Because Umaru's core trait is the ultimate homebody lifestyle, the choice of costume fabrics and authentic props was particularly crucial. First, for the costume, I custom-ordered this iconic orange plush cloak, paired with red shorts and white knee-high socks underneath. To complement the clean, translucent aesthetic of the overall visuals, a pure white background was chosen so that the texture of the orange cloak could stand out completely.
For makeup and styling, to match the proportions of a 2D Moe girl character, I selected a vibrant golden-yellow long straight wig and trimmed the bangs. In terms of makeup, enlarging contact lenses were paired with lively big-eye makeup, making the gaze appear more innocent and vivid. Eye makeup and lip color were kept as soft as possible to express Umaru's relaxed state at home and that subtle playful cunning.
The shooting process was more tiring than expected because I had to constantly adjust sitting postures to recreate that casual, slumped-on-the-floor feeling of a 'himouto' (homebody sister). To make the scenes look natural, I specially prepared a game controller prop. While shooting, I pretended to be fully immersed in gaming, letting my gaze fall naturally on the controller or forward so that the captured expressions were most lifelike. I also paid special attention to the curvature and drape of the cloak, striving to match the silhouette and visual effect of the original work as closely as possible, bringing out this lazy vibe to the fullest.
What attracts me most about the character Himouto! Umaru-chan is her sharp contrast. At school, she is a high-achieving, flawless pretty girl; once home, she puts on this orange cloak, potato chips in one hand and a controller in the other, living an extremely lazy and carefree life. When embodying this character in Roleplay, I tried my best to put myself into a deeply relaxed mindset, imagining returning to my coziest room without caring about others' eyes. The effortless ease in the photos comes largely from this complete immersion in Roleplay.
Post-processing maintained a high-key freshness while preserving the original high saturation and vividness of colors. This photo set is wonderful for conveying the feeling of letting go of stress and being one's true self at home. I am quite satisfied with this Himouto! Umaru-chan Anime cosplay work, both in terms of character fidelity and photographic composition. This shoot also let me experience Umaru's simple, pure, and carefree lifestyle, making the entire shooting process comfortable and enjoyable.
