Cutting straight to the chase, let's talk about this shoot. For this Phoebe Cosplay from Wuthering Waves, we experimented with an unconventional wide-angle lens, primarily aiming to leverage the visual tension brought by perspective distortion to intensify the character's innate commanding presence. Pairing low-angle shooting with Wide-angle photography created powerful converging lines across the frame. To prevent the distortion from looking awkward, how I held the staff became the linchpin of the composition. Extending the tip of the staff toward the lens utilized wide-angle forced perspective—making closer objects appear larger—so the golden bird ornament on the staff looked remarkably imposing, while naturally guiding the viewer's gaze along the shaft straight toward my face.
The crafting and wearing process of the costume itself was extraordinarily intricate. The outer layer is an off-white long trench coat trimmed with blue tassels and geometric gold patterns, worn over a black cropped tank top and a black pleated mini-skirt, accented with golden chains draped across the waist. Such a vibrant collision of white, black, blue, and gold could easily look cluttered against a pure white palace backdrop. To keep the visual crisp and clean, we intentionally dialed down the exposure compensation during shooting, preserving the garment's tactile texture in the highlights rather than blowing out into flat white. The wig features golden-yellow long hair with blunt bangs; sculpting full, bouncy curls on both sides required ample hairspray and flat irons. That oversized white wide-brimmed hat looks gorgeous, but heavily obstructs light; ducking my head even slightly would cast harsh shadows over my face, so my head angle needed micro-adjustments in tandem with fill lights to keep my face radiant and luminous.
The prop staff was built with solid craftsmanship—the metallic portions were thoroughly finished with paint and had considerable weight in hand. Throughout this photo set, I strove to make my staff-holding postures appear effortless yet commanding, avoiding the impression of stiffly hoisting a heavy object. The white Roman pillars and crystal chandelier in the background established a European palace foundation, while blue flowers scattered across the floor echoed the blue accents on the outfit, striking a harmonious color balance for this cosplay series.
Regarding emotional expression, Phoebe's character lore conveys a serene, sacred composure, akin to the world of Phoebe & Chubi. With a wide-angle lens right up close, any facial flaw or wandering gaze is amplified. Thus, in these photos, I maintained a stern, aloof expression, staring dead into the camera. Combined with the low-angle perspective, it evoked a haughty, commanding sense of detachment. Although repeatedly looking up into the camera strained my neck, the dramatic tension in the finished shots completely met expectations. This experimental perspective gave me a fresh appreciation for character expression and made me relish breaking free from conventional framing through Wide-angle photography. The resulting images not only showcase the intricate costume details, but also deliver a distinct dramatic theatricality far removed from everyday eye-level angles.
