Here are the official photos! This Outdoor photography session was truly a double test of strength and patience.
The location was chosen next to an ancient building filled with ginkgo leaves, perfectly matching the character's sense of accumulated history. The weather was great on the day of the shoot, but the light changed rapidly. To capture the texture of the sunset light filtering through reeds and ginkgo leaves onto the armor, we repeatedly adjusted several camera angles.
Styling the costume and wig was actually more time-consuming than expected. Especially with this red-and-blue contrasting main color scheme, improper lighting could easily look cheap. However, the photographer cleverly utilized the diffuse reflection of ambient light, giving the golden patterns on the armor and the maple leaf motifs on the sleeves a very vivid sense of depth and layer.
What gave me the strongest sense of immersion in this gear was actually these two swords. Although everyone knows they are props, holding their weight in hand directly alters one's posture. To accurately recreate the spirit of Dual wielding, the upper body's center of gravity had to be kept steady at all times. In particular, that crouched low-stance pose while holding swords in both hands required quite a bit of core strength and flexibility, as I realized after trying it a few times.
Recreating this character requires more than just having the outfit in place; more importantly, it's about capturing that "swordmaster" expression and demeanor. Her gaze between looking down and glancing up carries a touch of worldly experience, pride, and resolve. As the phrase goes, "the end of training is reaching the infinite"—when posing, I deliberately imagined reaching that state of ultimate enlightenment. Though impossible in reality, at least in front of the lens I could convey that powerful aura.
The reed scene created a very unique vibe. When the wind blew, the soft, fluffy texture and swaying strands of hair gave the static image a dynamic sense of extension. The framing for this shoot wasn't limited to full-body shots; we also tried side angles and close-ups. Although some collage layouts were post-production effects, my favorite single shot is the final one showing the lowered stance and leg lines—it's definitely the defining highlight of this set.
Every cosplay experience is essentially a reinterpretation of the original work. Musashi carries a heavy burden in her story, and the contrast between her destiny as "floating duckweed" and her unyielding fighting spirit forms a fascinating dynamic. This instilled a sense of reverence in me during the shoot, pushing me to embody her unique Japanese-style samurai spirit rather than simply wearing a costume and striking a pose.
From preparation to shooting, a lot of thought went into this set, experimenting with different lighting and poses. I feel the final result truly does justice to this outfit. Rather than chasing excessive post-processing filters, preserving the raw texture of light and shadow is where the true charm of portrait photography lies.
